Reports: Barcelona keen on signing La Liga defender

Sevilla v Athletic Bilbao - UEFA Europa League Quarter Final: Second Leg
A good buy?

What’s the rumour?

According to a report from Express, Barcelona are reportedly eyeing up a move for Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet, as the 22-year-old has been rather impressive this season.

In case you didn't know...

Lenglet has enjoyed a breakthrough season for Sevilla this campaign. He has stepped up to be their first-choice centre-back and has made an incredible 48 appearances for the club in all competitions this season. He has also found the back of the net 4 times.

The French defender was signed from French club Nancy in the 2017 January transfer window. His current contract runs out only in 2021. He also has a €30 million buy-out clause in his contract.

The heart of the matter

Barcelona seem to be having issues at the back, particularly at centre-back. Gerard Pique is not getting any younger, Javier Mascherano left the club in January, new signing Yerry Mina has failed to impress and there have been several rumours surrounding Samuel Umtiti's potential exit as well.

They are eager to add more steel to their back line and have identified Lenglet as a possible target this summer. Lenglet, however, is seeking assurances over his playing time and will be interested in a move only if his demands are met.

Rumour rating/probability - 6/10

Many sources are reporting the same and there may be some truth in the rumour. The story may unfold in the coming weeks and we will get to know more then.

Author’s take

If Mina's struggles continue and Umtiti decides to leave Barcelona, they will be in big trouble. So it is likely that they will look to sign a defender this summer and Lenglet is an ideal choice. The player may need some persuasion but if Barcelona can make it happen, he will be a really solid addition.
