Barcelona became the club with most Ballon d'Or wins in history, as Lionel Messi won the prestigious award for a record sixth time in France last night. As the legendary Argentine pipped Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo to the award, the Catalan giants moved ahead of arch-rivals Real Madrid with 12 Ballon d'Or wins to their name, with Messi being responsible for half that tally.

Los Blancos were behind their local rivals in 2015 after the Barcelona man won the award for the fifth time but since then, Ronaldo picked up the award in successive years, before Luka Modric became the first player aside from the pair to win the award since Kaka in 2007, as he won the award in 2018.

Barcelona are widely recognised as one of the biggest clubs in world football and by virtue of Messi's most recent Ballon d'Or triumph, they've taken their tally up to 12 and moved ahead of the Madrid club.
