What's the story?

Barcelona ace Luis Suarez was quick to react to Real Madrid's humiliating Champions League exit after Los Blancos suffered a 4-1 loss at the hands of Ajax at the Santiago Bernabeu last night.

In case you didn't know...

Real Madrid played host to Ajax in the second leg of their Round of 16 fixture on Tuesday in a game that saw the defending Champions League champions suffer their third consecutive defeat in a week.

Santiago Solari's side crashed out of the Copa del Rey last week before suffering their second defeat to Barcelona in three days in a La Liga clash. The fact that Los Blancos can no longer challenge for the domestic title made last night's Champions League game even more crucial for them to save their season.

Hakim Ziyech, David Neres, Dusan Tadic and Lasse Schone all found the net for Ajax to make sure that Marco Asensio's second-half goal would do nothing to help the hosts.

With the victory, Ajax became the first team to overturn a 2-1 home defeat in Europe's top competition.

The heart of the matter

Coming fresh out of Barcelona's consecutive wins over Real Madrid last week, Suarez reacted to the monumental defeat by heaping praise on his former club on social media. The Uruguayan appears to still hold affection for the Dutch outfit, whom he joined after leaving Groningen in the initial years of his career.

The former Liverpool star quoted a tweet from Ajax's official account that celebrated the win and wrote, "Congratulations, I have always been a fan of Ajax."

A number of publications have even taken the response as a subtle dig at Barcelona's arch-rivals.

Last week, Suarez was seen engaging in a spat with Los Blancos defender Sergio Reguilon in their Clasico clash in La Liga. Reguilon reportedly called the Uruguayan "ugly" in a clash that even involved Barcelona captain Messi.

What's next?

While Real Madrid are next scheduled to face Valladolid in La Liga on Sunday, Barcelona will lock horns with Girona in the Supercopa de Catalunya later tonight.
