EPL 2016/17: Chelsea 1-0 West Bromwich Albion - Player Ratings

Diego Costa
Costa was combative, full of energy and scored the vital goal for Chelsea

West Brom

Darren Fletcher, Kante
West Brom battled hard and it was unfortunate that they did not come away with any points

Ben Foster – 7/10

Foster was good when called upon, and in truth, had very little to do as Chelsea had only two shots on target.

Craig Dawson – 6/10

Dawson did not give much space to Hazard or Pedro and defended his right flank superbly. However, he gave away a number of fouls and picked up his fifth booking of the season which will make him miss the Swansea game.

Gareth McAuley – 5/10

McAuley had a rather composed and good game until the 76th minute when he was ruffled and strong-armed by Diego Costa on the Chelsea right flank, he simply could not push a determined Costa off the ball and it led to the goal which the Spaniard rifled in.

Jonny Evans – 7/10

Evans was perhaps West Brom’s best player on the night. He was good on the ball and always seemed to have time on it and he also made a number of important tackles during the game. Classy performance from the former Manchester United defender.

Allan Nyom – 6/10

Nyom was extremely physical on his flank and gave Moses no room to operate, he even stifled Pedro and Hazard when they were at him. Had a number of tussles with Pedro and came out on top most of the times. A good game from him but he lost possession at times after getting into good positions.

Darren Fletcher – 6.5/10

Fletcher was all over the pitch, as usual. The Baggies captain had a game full of industry and effort, and organised his side really well. He nullified Matic and Kante in the midfield and prevented them from distributing the ball around too much. A classic Fletcher performance.

Claudio Yacob – 6/10

Yacob was involved in a number of tussles throughout the game, especially with Pedro and got booked for a foul on Kante on 56 minutes.

Chris Brunt – 6/10

Brunt had a good shot from about 25 yards in the first half that had Courtois scrambling, but he fired narrowly wide. He put in a tireless effort up and down the pitch but failed to make a big impact going forward.

James Morrison – 5/10

Morrison could not link up between the West Brom midfield and attack, and his passing was appalling which prevented West Brom from doing anything going forward

Matt Phillips – 6/10

Matt Phillips was asked to do a job on Victor Moses by manager Tony Pulis and did it to the T, preventing Moses from bombarding down the flank. He supported his full back Nyom well throughout the game, and put in plenty of effort, but did not contribute much going forward.

Salomon Rondon – 7/10

Rondon was all over David Luiz in the opening exchanges and gave the Brazilian a night to forget. He had Albion’s best chances, especially after getting the better of Luiz and going almost 1 v 1 with Courtois, however, he could not finish. He had plenty of drive and belief and single handedly offered Albion’s best attacks, a good performance that just needed a goal to top it off.
