Manchester United:

David de Gea: 2/10

Brought into the team in place of regular cup goalkeeper Sergio Romero, De Gea was at fault for the second goal and arguably should have done better with Giroud’s attempt as well.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 5/10

Although full of running and desire to get forward, the young right-back had a disappointing outing and was not able to influence the game much at either end.

Victor Lindelof: 4/10

Although Lindelof showed great desire in bringing the ball out from the back on multiple occasions, it was he who allowed Giroud to steal in ahead of him to poke home the opener. He was quite lightweight defensively throughout.

Harry Maguire: 4/10

No Manchester United defender covered themselves in glory, but Maguire was particularly ponderous in possession as United continued to play out from the back despite coming under pressure from a well-organised Chelsea unit. Unlucky to concede an own goal for Chelsea’s third.

Eric Bailly: 4/10

The Ivorian was unfortunate to come off just before half time with a nasty-looking head injury, but had been looking quite nervous in possession as Manchester United persisted with playing out from the back in the first half.

Brandon Williams: 5/10

Returning to the starting lineup after going off injured against Southampton, the young full-back had his hands full with Willian and Reece James running down his flank and failed to track Azpilicueta as he set up the first goal.

Nemanja Matic: 5/10

The former Chelsea man went about his business well, making his usual share of interceptions and tackles but was unable to set Manchester United off on any attacks as a result.

Fred: 5/10

Replacing Paul Pogba in the starting lineup, the Brazilian was a willing runner in midfield but was unable to contribute much either offensively or defensively.

Daniel James: 4/10

Another player who returned to the starting lineup after a spell on the bench, James was largely anonymous as Manchester United failed to create anything of note in the opposition half.

Bruno Fernandes: 5/10

All of United’s attacking play predictably went through Fernandes, but the Portuguese playmaker was not able to create any goal-scoring opportunities of note. A late penalty only served as consolation for his side.

Marcus Rashford: 5/10

Fresh from his best outing post-lockdown, the young Englishman was uncharacteristically off the pace throughout the game and was taken off late on for Odion Ighalo.

Substitutes:

Anthony Martial: 6/10

A surprise omission from the starting eleven, the Frenchman made a noticeable impact coming on from the bench and won the penalty that Fernandes converted to get Manchester United on the scoresheet.

Paul Pogba: 5/10

The Frenchman was brought on from the bench soon after Manchester United went two down and did his utmost to get his side back into the game, but was unable to really influence proceedings.

Mason Greenwood: 5/10

Manchester United’s teenage sensation came on with Pogba early in the second half and showed signs of promise without being able to have any real impact on the game.

Odion Ighalo: 5/10

The boyhood Manchester United fan was unable to drag his side back into the contest after coming on late in the game but showed off his strength and hold-up play in his time on the pitch.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah: 5/10

A late replacement for Wan-Bissaka, the young defender did not have much to do as his side pushed hard up the field looking for a way back into the contest. He hardly got on the ball during his short stint on the pitch.
