The Gunners have been in scintillating form recently

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes that Chelsea and Liverpool are better teams than Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger’s men had a thumping win over West Ham United last week as they scored five goals against the Hammers in the Premier League on Saturday. Antonio Conte’s Blues continued their scintillating form in the Premier League, thrashing Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 3-1 in the League last week.

Liverpool, on the other hand, blew a 3-1 lead as Ake scored in added time to give the Cherries a 4-3 win over the Merseyside club. Chelsea remain at the top with 34 points followed by Arsenal and Liverpool in 2nd and 3rd positions.

Despite Arsenal being 2nd in the Premier League, with just one defeat so far at the hands of Liverpool on the opening day of the League campaign, Lawrenson feels that the Gunners are trailing in the wake of the Blues and Reds.

“[Arsenal are] just a little bit below,” Lawrenson told Radio Five Live in a debate about the Premier League’s top teams.

Lawrenson claimed that Arsenal can have a bad day for no particular reason and that the club does that on a regular basis.

“The problem for Arsenal is they can just have a bad day, can’t they? There doesn’t seem to be any reason for it. Arsenal seem to do it on a regular basis.”

The race for the Premier League title this season will be the toughest in recent times given the kind of world class managers many teams have in charge. Teams like Chelsea and Liverpool which finished outside the top four last season look like title contenders this season.

Both clubs have had a significant change up both in staff and players as the Chelsea brought in Italian manager Antonio Conte who won major trophies while he was with Italian champions Juventus FC.

Liverpool also had many changes as the owners appointed former Borussia Dortmund manager, Jürgen Klopp as the boss of the Reds and also brought in some new players in the form of Sadio Mane, Joel Matip, and Georginio Wijnaldum. Chelsea and Liverpool are currently in the Champions League positions with Arsenal and Manchester City giving them company in the top 4.

While Manchester United have fallen behind in the race for the title, their neighbours Manchester City look convincing under new manager Pep Guardiola. Although their attack has been firing on all cylinders their problem seems to lie with their defence. If the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager can figure out a way to solidify his defence, Manchester City can also be in the running to lift the Premier League title.
