Spanish outfit Valencia made a last minute attempt to bring their former player Juan Mata on a loan deal before the transfer window shut on Monday, according to Spanish tabloid Superdeporte, ESPN reports.
According to the paper, Amadeo Salvo, Valencia’s president, discussed the possibility of bringing the 25-year-old back to the club with the player’s father, but on receiving unfavourable feedback, Salvo decided against contacting Chelsea.
The player’s father was reported to be in Valencia on Monday, after his son’s team lost to Bayern Munich in the European Super Cup on Monday. Mata was an unused substitute in the match for the third consecutive time, after playing just one game for the Blues this season.
Reports emerged that Premier League rivals Arsenal were interested in signing the midfielder, after Mata Sr was spotted watching The Gunners’ Champions League second leg play-off against Fenerbahce.
French giants PSG had come close to signing the Spanish international on Monday, and offered to submit another bid in January should the players situation continue to decline at Chelsea.
The player joined Valencia in 2007, from Real Madrid’s youth squad, and left the Spanish club in 2011 to join Chelsea for £26 million and was named the club’s player of the year for two consecutive seasons.
