What's the news?

According to the reports, Chelsea's board has identified Zinedine Zidane and Frank Lampard as the prime options to replace Maurizio Sarri at the club. The Italian has been criticized heavily for his team's performances in the last few weeks and could possibly be sacked if he fails to inspire his team out of their on-going crisis.

In case you didn't know...

Zinedine Zidane managed Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018 and won one LaLiga title, a solitary Supercopa de Espana, three UEFA Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA Club World Cup trophies in the same period.

He left the Spanish club at the end of last season and has been out of the touchlines since then.

On the other hand, Frank Lampard enjoyed a wonderful playing career with the Blues and is currently the manager of Championship side, Derby County, who are very much in the mix, as far as a playoff spot is concerned.

The heart of the matter

According to reports from Sky Sports, Chelsea are considering Zinedine Zidane and Frank Lampard as the possible candidates to replace the under-fire Sarri at the club.

Chelsea's board are understandably very concerned about their recent performances and had also conducted a meeting with Maurizio Sarri over his future at the club, following the demoralizing FA Cup defeat at home to Manchester United in the fifth round.

The Blues are considering giving assistant manager Gianfranco Zola charge of the team for rest of the season, with a possibility of appointing a new manager in summer.

Gianfranco Zola is currently acting as the club’s first-team assistant coach and has been at the club since the appointment of Sarri in the last summer.

What's next?

After a disappointing defeat against Manchester United, Chelsea will be looking forward to returning back to the winning ways when they host Malmo FF at Stamford Bridge for the second leg of the Europa League round-of-32 game. They will head into the fixture with a one-goal lead.

Following that, the Blues will take part in the Carabao Cup final showdown at Wembley against Manchester City on Sunday.
