Chelsea Target Luka Modric Hands In Transfer Request At Spurs

Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric has come out and handed in a transfer request to facilitate a move to Chelsea, according to reports. Spurs have already rejected two bids made by the Blues, but it now seems as if Modric is willing to take matters into his own hands.

Modric hands in transfer request

According to English media outlet The Mirror, Modric handed in a transfer request after Tottenham landed in South Africa for their pre-season promotional tour. The report said-

Luka Modric last night stepped up his bid to leave Tottenham by submitting a transfer request.

Sources close to the player claim he informed the club in writing of his intention to leave after arriving in South Africa, where Spurs have begun their pre-season tour.

Modric’s potential Chelsea move has been simmering for many weeks, and things finally seem to have gone off the boil and all cards are being played out in the open now. Chelsea had made a customary early bid of 22 million pounds, which Spurs instantly rejected and Redknapp even went as far as to label it ‘ridiculous’.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy also came out with a strongly worded statement saying that Modric would not be allowed to leave the North London club under any circumstances. He revealed that comprehensive talks had taken place with Modric and he had been explained that he would play for Spurs next season.

But then Modric, who had hitherto remained respectfully silent, came out in the open and publicly expressed his desire to move to Chelsea next season. He accused Levy of breaking a gentleman’s agreement wherein Modric would have been allowed to move if a bigger club made an offer. He claimed that he had been threatened with a place on the bench if he didn’t cooperate, and stated that he would regret it if the Chelsea move failed to materialise.

And now things have gone off the boil, with Modric risking alienation and even open hostility from Spurs fans by handing in a transfer request. It remains to be seen if Spurs finally relent and start negotiating a price with Chelsea, or if Levy carries through his threat to relegate Modric to the bench. Stay tuned for more in this regard.
