Chelsea U-18s retain the FA Youth Cup title

Chelsea have won the title 4 times in the last 6 editions

Chelsea ran out 5-2 winners over two legs against Manchester City to successfully defend their FA Youth Cup title. This has been the young Blues’ youth FA Youth Cup success in six years.

The Blues won the away leg 3-1 and the return leg at home 2-1 coming from behind to seal their status as champions with a 5-2 aggregate. The return leg at Stamford Bridge hosted a crowd of nearly 11,000 spectators cheering on the youth, yet one of them stood out among the others, the owner of Chelsea Football Club, Roman Abramovich.

While, City’s performance at home was tame and Chelsea cruised to a 3-1 win, they scored in the 6th minute through Kelechi Iheanacho at the Bridge to put Chelsea nerves on edge. The Londoners, however, responded well equalising from a corner through Isaiah Brown in the 20th minute and taking the lead soon after half-time through Tammy Abraham who scored his 39th goal of the season.

City’s Brandon Barker had a remarkably good spell following City’s goal, but it produced no end product owing to some splendid defensive work from midfield and a slice of good fortune for Chelsea.

This is the second cup Chelsea U-18 manager Joel Edwards’ side have won in a couple of weeks as they beat Shakhtar Donetsk to clinch the UEFA Youth League title in Switzerland earlier this month.

Edwards appreciated his team, saying it was a “mature performance” from the young guns. He added, “The players take their lead from the first team. They know if you want to be a Chelsea player, you have to be a winner.”
