Chelsea's interest in Atletico Madrid striker Jackson Martinez is not a 'lie', according to his agent

Martinez played in all the league games for Atletico before getting injured

Atletico Madrid striker Jackson Martinez’s agent Henrique Pompeo has admitted that Chelsea have shown interest in the player. Martinez moved to the Rojiblancos from Porto in the summer transfer window and has scored two goals for them in a total of eleven appearances.

On the other hand, Chelsea have had a torrid season thus far as they are currently languishing in 15th position with only 19 points in from eighteen games. The Blues’ strikers have failed to score goals on a regular basis and quite naturally, they are in a dire need of a striker.

There have been widespread reports in Spain in the past few weeks that the English champions are interested in the Atleti striker. When the Colombian striker’s agent was asked if there was any sort of truth in the reports, Pompeo did not completely deny the rumours, saying that football was an uncertain sport.

“Jackson wants to succeed at Atletico, but it’s the club who will decide his future,” Pompeo said.

“I can't say it's a lie, this is football and nobody knows what the future holds, what I can say is that Jackson isn't a player who leaves a club unless it's through the front door.”

Martinez is happy in Madrid

The 29-year-old has been away from the field for more than a month now, he picked up an injury while playing for his country Colombia in a World Cup qualifying match against Chile on November 12 after he suffered a heavy collision with Chile's Francisco Silva.

The striker had played in all of Atletico’s 11 league games until then, but supposedly his recovery process is in the final stages and he could be back by the start of new year.

However, despite Chelsea interests, Martinez’s agent laid stress on the fact that his client is happy to stay at the Vicente Calderon and will stay calm while making his return from the injury.

“He made a decision and he's very happy in Madrid, he loves the club, although obviously he would have preferred to have got off to a different start on a personal level, but he's happy for the squad because things are going well,” Pompeo added.

“Jackson is very grateful to Atletico, to (chief executive Miguel Angel) Gil Marin and (president Enrique) Cerezo, because they made a big economic effort to sign him and with calm and continuity Jackson will pay them back on the pitch.

“He's had to adapt to a new mentality playing style, and a thousand other things, and then he was injured.”
