English club Sunderland have confirmed the signing of former Manchester City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon on a 4-year deal as the officials announced that the released keeper will join black cats on a free transfer from July 1.

The 6 ft 8” Romanian shot stopper has been looking for a move after being released by Manchester City at the end of May after his 3-season spell at Eastlands and now has got a chance to put his career back on track with his move to the Stadium of lights.

The 27-year-old expressed his delight at the move as he spoke to the club’s official website, “It is a great privilege and honour to join a club like Sunderland. They have an amazing history and tradition and of course passionate fans,”

“When I left Manchester City, it was important that I chose a club with good ambition and a head coach who has the hunger and desire to take the team forward,” he added.

Already having a top-class goalkeeper like Vito Mannone at their disposition, there will be a cut throat competition between them for the number one spot.

SAFC sporting director Lee Congerton said, “Competition for places is healthy and brings out the best in players. We already have a great goalkeeper in Vito Manonne and another one now in Costel.”

Gus Poyet has been looking to strengthen his squad after his last gasp escape from relegation and Pantilimon will be the third free-transfer acquistion for Gus Poyet after the signing of Jordi Gomez and Billy Jones.
