Ajax Amsterdam have knocked out Real Madrid from the UEFA Champions League with a 4-1 win (5-3 on aggregate) in what was the Los Blancos' first European campaign since the departure of Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo - two of the most influential personalities who propelled Real Madrid to their record third consecutive UCL title, last summer.

Following an elimination from the Copa del Rey at the hands of their bitter rivals FC Barcelona, the 13-time European champions had the opportunity to reduce the gap between them and the Catalans in La Liga, failing in which, Santiago Solari's men now sit 12 points adrift of their arch-rivals who are currently occupying the top spot of the league table.

Failing miserably in the domestic competitions, Madrid had their only hopes of silverware from the UEFA Champions League. Solari's men took to the field with the view of stretching their exceptional performances in the European competition. However, Ajax, on the other hand, had different plans for the hosts.

Goals from Hakim Ziyech and David Neres saw Madrid's 2-1 away lead overturned within the first twenty minutes of the game. Dusan Tadic, the creator of the opening two goals, scored the third goal himself for the visitors as the referee controversially allowed the goal in favor of the Dutch outfit.

Madrid winger Marco Asensio scored the sole goal for the hosts to raise a sense of belief within the Madrid squad. However, a stunning free-kick from Lasse Schone sealed the match for the away side as they comfortably knocked out the reigning European champions, becoming the first team to do this in over 1000 days.

Since Cristiano Ronaldo has moved to Juventus, the Los Blancos have struggled to score goals. The Portuguese winger guaranteed almost 50 goals per season. Since the departure of the 34-year-old, Madrid have failed miserably to find the back of the net, resulting in a trophy-less season for the Spanish giants.
