Manchester United are keen to offload Bastian Schweinsteiger and the club is willing to pay off the remainder of the German’s contract. German daily, Sport Bild claims that United have offered Schweinsteiger £9.6m in order to terminate his contract.

New manager, Jose Mourinho has made it clear that the veteran German midfielder is not part of his plans and is keen to pay him off. However, it is rumoured that the German wants to see out the rest of his contract and has rejected the club’s offer. Schweinsteiger currently is on a staggering £180,000-a-week contract with The Red Devils which runs till 2018 which would see him earn £15.7 million.

The 32-year-old hasn’t played for United ever since Jose Mourinho took charge and the United manager’s treatment of Schweinsteiger has drawn wide criticism as the German has been an outcast at the club since the start of the season. Mourinho has even forced Schweinsteiger to train with the U21’s until he was brought back to train with the first team a fortnight ago.

The former Bayern Munich player arrived at Old Trafford during the 2015 summer transfer window from Bayern Munich for £6.5 million. He made 31 appearances for the club last season under Mourinho’ s predecessor, Louis van Gaal.

The German would know that if he needs first team action, he must leave Old Trafford as Mourinho considers him surplus to requirements at the club. However, securing a move elsewhere is not easy as it would be difficult to find a club in Europe willing to afford his colossal wages and his injury record is not that great. Schweinsteiger has been recently linked with a move to the MLS and the Chinese Super League.

Schweinsteiger’s last appearance for United was in March and he certainly knows that his Manchester United career is heading in the wrong direction. He tweeted in August, “MUFC will be my last club in Europe. I respect other clubs but Manchester United was the only one which could make me leave Bayern Munich. I will be ready if the team needs me. This is all I can say about my current situation. I want to thank the fans for their amazing support over the recent weeks.”

Schweinsteiger is the least of Mourinho’s problems as he is enduring a tough time in Manchester. His side is currently 6th in the Premier League, 8 points behind leaders Liverpool.
