Arsenal were the biggest spenders and probably the biggest winners on deadline day as they completed the high profile signing of German superstar Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid on a long-term deal and for a club record fee believed to be in the region of £42.5 million. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder was not the only signing to arrive at the Emirates Stadium on Monday, as the Gunners also brought in Italian keeper Emiliano Viviano on a season-long loan from Serie B side Palermo.

The reigning Premier League champions, Manchester United, finally made their first major signing of the summer – after several failed attempts to bring in Thiago Alcantara, Cesc Fabregas, Leighton Baines and most recently Ander Herrera – as they wrapped up a deal for Marouane Fellaini very late on deadline day. The Belgium international joins United for a fee in the region of £27.5 million from Everton. The Toffees, on the other hand, were most the busiest side in the transfer market on deadline day as they replace the outgoing Fellaini by signing Wigan Athletic’s James McCarthy for £13 million and Manchester City’s Gareth Barry on a season-long loan. Everton sold striker Victor Anichebe to West Bromwich Albion for £5 million, and replaced him with Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
Liverpool didn’t make the same mistake like last season and completed their business early in the day on transfer deadline day. The Reds, who are currently at the top of the table following their win over Manchester United at the weekend, completed the triple signing of Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Mamadou Sakho for £17 million, Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori for £7 million and out-of-favour Chelsea winger Victor Moses on a season-long loan for a £1 million loan fee and with an option to buy at the end of the season. There were also a couple of departures at Anfield as Italian striker Fabio Borini joined Sunderland on loan and Dani Pacheco signed for Spanish second division side Alcoron on a permanent deal.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur were relatively quiet on deadline day having done their business early on in the summer. Jose Mourinho’s side saw the likes of Ulises Davila (Cordoba), Christian Atsu and Sam Hutchinson (both Vitesse Arnhem) leave on season-long loans, while Manchester City signed veteran defender Martin Demichelis in the early hours on Monday and allowed midfielder Abdul Razak join Anzhi Makhachkala on loan. The long lasting transfer saga of Gareth Bale finally came to a conclusion as Real Madrid presented the Welshman to the fans at the Santiago Bernabeu after completing the world record transfer from Tottenham Hotspur. Left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto and young midfielder Tom Carroll joined Championship side Queens Park Rangers on loan.
Sunderland had added no fewer than 12 players this summer and on deadline day the Black Cats added two more. Borini joined the Stadium of Light outfit from Liverpool on loan after an injury hit first season at Anfield and he was joined by his compatriot Andrea Dossena from Napoli on a one-year-contract. There was a departure also as Benin international Stephane Sessegnon joined West Brom for a transfer record fee rumoured to be in the region of £7 million. The Baggies also added Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille (loan), free agent Lee Camp and Everton’s Victor Anichebe (£5m), and sold Peter Odemwingie to Cardiff City for £2.25 million.
Crystal Palace were one of the busiest clubs on deadline day after Everton as they completed the signings of four new players. Defenders Jack Hunt and Adrian Mariappa joined the Eagles for an undisclosed fee from Huddersfield Town and Reading respectively, while Barry Bannan (£2m) reunited with his former Blackpool boss Ian Holloway at Selhurst Park and he was soon joined by Cameron Jerome from Stoke City very late in the day. Aston Villa didn’t do much of business on the final day of the transfer market but signed striker Libor Kozak from Lazio for an undisclosed fee, while like Bannan, Stephen Ireland reunited with his former manager Mark Hughes at Stoke City. The Potters also signed Bundesliga bad-boy Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen for £2 million, while saw the likes of Florent Cuveliar (Sheffield United), Michael Kightly (Burnley) and Ryan Shotton (Wigan Athletic) leave on loan.
Southampton’s Zambian striker Emmanuel Mayuka departed St. Mary’s to join French side Sochaux on a season-long loan with an option to buy, while Norwich City’s Jacob Butterfield joined Middlesbrough on loan. Hull City re-signed Gedo from Al-Ahly, Swansea added Alvaro Vazquez on loan and Fulham signed Montenegro international Elsad Zverotic for an undisclosed fee from Swiss side BSC Young Boys. Finally, Newcastle United and West Ham United were the only two inactive sides on deadline day as they failed to strengthen their squad, disappointing their fans in the process.
