How Juventus could line up under Maurizio Sarri this season

A lot has happened at the Old Lady in recent weeks. Maurizio Sarri was named as the Bianconeri's new manager, and in addition to him, the chiefs at Turin have continued to acquire talent to push the club to the upper echelons of European football.

The Italian champions have, on free transfers, snapped up former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from Paris Saint-Germain alongside his teammate in Paris, Adrien Rabiot. Aaron Ramsey also made the switch to Juventus after he decided no to renew his contract at Arsenal.

Juventus have also spent approximately £135 million on purchasing a new breed of defenders. They have brought in 21-year-old centre-back Merih Demiral from Sassuolo, 20-year-old left-back Luca Pellegrini from AS Roma, and 21-year-old centre-back Cristian Romero from Genoa. Most recently, the Matthijs de Ligt transfer saga has finally ended as Juventus remained firmly ahead of the race to buy the 19-year-old and eventually settled Ajax with around £77 million.

It really isn't surprising that Juventus haven't bought any forwards. With an ageless Cristiano Ronaldo, a capable Gonzalo Higuain, and a list of other world-class forwards that include Federico Bernardeschi and Moise Kean, there's really no need to purchase a striker or wing-forward.

In total, the Bianconeri have added seven new players to the squad. While some of them - like Demiral and Romero - might not make starting XI any time soon, some players were certainly brought in to close loopholes in the first team.

Finally, taking a look at Sarri and his personified Sarri-ball, supporters at Turin can expect to see attractive attacking football of the highest class - the sort Maurizio Sarri is known for. The former Chelsea gaffer is unlikely to change his sensational style of play, and will certainly maintain his 4-3-3 formation.

Without further ado, let us look at how Sarri could line up his Juventus players in the coming season.

#4 Between the sticks - Wojciech Szczesny

Sarri would not have any need to make any changes in this position. Even with Buffon's return to Turin, it is unlikely that much will change for the supporters between the sticks.

Wojciech Szczesny has been a strong shot-stopper for the Turin giants, and while hearts may lie with 41-year-old Buffon, Sarri would most certainly keep Szczesny for very important matches. The younger goalkeeper is confident in goal and will adapt to being part of the ball possession and planning attacks in Sarri's style of play.

Buffon will, however, remain a potential starter, especially if the Szczesny fails to live up to Sarri's expectations. No matter what Sarri's decision for this role is, the former Napoli manager would have world-class goalkeepers to choose from, and that sounds better than the alternative.

#3 The back four: Sandro (LB) - Chiellini (CB) - de Ligt (CB) - Cancelo (RB)

In left-back sits the Bianconeri's first choice for that position, Alex Sandro. While his season under former coach Massimiliano Allegri was below expectations, Sandro will have a new opportunity to return to full form under Sarri.

Sandro's ability to maraud down the left flank and enhance the attack will come in handy for Sarri, and the Italiani is likely to take advantage of that. On the other hand, the arrival of the young Luca Pellegrini will keep Sandro consistent. Too many slipups and Sarri will replace him.

The centre-back pairing will be the most important aspect of Sarri's starting XI. With the Bianconeri bolstering their defence with over five players, Sarri has quite a few centre-backs to choose from.

Chiellini and Bonucci are both aging, and Juventus have brought in young blood to take over. However, Sarri may be looking at putting experience in his starting XI. Chiellini, who is a ball-playing defender, would likely be Sarri's choice for experience.

Yet, Juventus didn't just spend millions of pounds on de Ligt for nothing. The 19-year-old will most likely have a position in the starting XI, but he would have to impress as he did for Ajax to maintain that spot.

Joao Cancelo was consistent and solid for Juventus under Allegri, and Sarri would most likely use him, in the hope that he continues in his top form. If Cancelo starts the pre-season adapting to Sarri-ball efficiently, he would become the irreplaceable 'Dani Alves' of the team.

While there may be reports that Juventus want Cancelo out, Sarri isn't likely to give out one of the Bianconeri's top performers so far.

#2 The midfield trio: Bentancur (LCM) - Pjanic (CM/DM) - Ramsey (RCM)

Thanks to Bentancur's growth and development at the Old Lady, Sarri will likely place him high the pecking order. Rabiot, who recently joined in from PSG, has not had much playing time and would need to convince Sarri to play him.

Emre Can and Blaise Matuidi are also capable of Bentancur's position and they would do all they can to increase their minutes.

Pjanic is the player closest to Jorginho at Juventus. With his technical skills in passing and vision, he would be capable of becoming the necessary pivot Sarri needs to make Sarriball work in Turin.

Apart from these qualities, he is also efficient in aiding his team at the back and will look to retrieve the ball and restart the attack.

The third person in the starting midfield trio is Aaron Ramsey. The Welshman is the most attack-minded midfielder the Bianconeri have. His ability to rush down the middle in search for spaces and opportunities makes him a threat to the rest of the Serie A clubs, and Sarri will look to exploit that.

Ramsey is uncanny with possession of the ball, and because he can choose between laying it towards a forward or taking a searing shot himself, opposing teams have to be wary around him. Sarri would love his tenacity, and while other midfielders are available, it is unlikely that they would take a position above Ramsey.

#1 The forward trio: Ronaldo (LWF) - Dybala (CF/SS) - Bernardeschi (RWF)

FC Internazionale v Juventus - Serie A
FC Internazionale v Juventus - Serie A

Sarri loves to keep his best player on the left-wing. In Napoli, it was Insigne. In Chelsea, it was Hazard. Both players were exceptional during their respective seasons with Maurizio Sarri, and it doesn't look like that will change at Juventus.

Ronaldo is arguably the best player in the world, and he fits perfectly in that left-wing forward position that Sarri uses so efficiently. It wouldn't be unexpected to see Ronaldo bang in goals more fluently this coming season than he did under Allegri.

As for his replacement during rotations, Moise Kean is capable of taking Sarri's left-wing mantle when required.

Bernardeschi is capable of being Sarri's right-wing man. Added to the fact that there aren't that many options available for the Italian giants, Bernardeschi is fit as a fiddle and maintained great form last season.

While he will not be Sarri's focal point of attack, he will certainly remain a threat on the field, and will easily take his chances when those opportunities arise.

Paulo Dybala will likely be Sarri's first choice for the center-forward position. While much noise has been made about his unquenchable relationship with Higuain, the 31-year-old Argentine did not do enough at Chelsea to convince Sarri to choose him again.

Dybala on the other hand, is barrels laden with potential. Dries Mertens took up this position in Napoli under Sarri, and this enhanced the left-wing focal point of attack even more. Dybala would not have much of a problem playing as Sarri's second striker, rather than a winger during Allegri's era.
