Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is hoping to sign two players from his former club Real Madrid in the form of majestic midfielder Luka Modric and highly rated youngster Raphael Varane, report the Daily Star.

The Stamford Bridge outfit appeared to be set for a sparse summer in regards to their transfer activity due to the restrictions of Financial Fair Play but received a huge boost when David Luiz agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain for a rumoured £40 million fee.

Meanwhile, the Spanish giants are believed to be keen on Chelsea’s Brazilian midfielder Ramires, but the Portuguese boss is adamant he will only sanction a £27 million sale of the 27-year-old if he can negotiate a deal to sign Modric as part of the transfer.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has become an integral member of Carlo Ancelotti’s Champions League winning side, but Chelsea are confident they can persuade the Croatian to make a Premier League return.

However, following the recent acquisition of Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, the west Londoners’ are well stocked for midfielders if Madrid choose to ignore Mourinho’s pleas for Modric, while another centre-back is seen as a priority following Luiz’s departure.

Frenchman Varane was touted as one of the best young defenders in world football by Mourinho when he arrived at the Bernabeu from Lens and the Blues boss is hopeful he can be reunited with the 21-year-old.

With Los Blancos’ interest in Ramires growing, Mourinho may hold all the aces if any deal is to be agreed as he is keen to secure the signing of two Madrid players and also has the cushion of a significant transfer budget following the successful business they have concluded so far.
