Lee Cattermole: The Unsung Black Cat

Caption

Lee Cattermole was easily the best player against Chelsea as the Black Cats held the Barclays Premier League leaders to a 0-0 draw .

Lee Cattermole produces a top class performance. He was magnificient. But, once again, he was overlooked when top performers of the match were discussed. Critics and Analysts have always looked down upon this defensive midfielder . He scraps for every ball but his reputation precedes him. His disciplinary record is poor, but that comes from playing on the edge and being a tackling, tough midefielder. The English Premier Legaue can boast of very few great defensive midfielders. Lee cattermole is rarely counted among them. Thanks once again to his aggression, which needs to be toned down a bit. Against Chelsea he showed he can perform against the very best. Sunderland Boss Gus Poyet was full of praise for his midefielder after the game.

Against Chelsea :

He was resilient. He was disciplined. He was his usual aggressive self and went for each and every ball that came his way, from the 1st minute till the refree blew the final whistle . He marked players tightly and was a key in breaking down Chelsea attacks. It was a truly inspirational performance as he spurred his teamto what was a great result for Sunderland. He was the best player on pitch against the Blues from London. His tough tackling style was on full display. He blocked several goal bound efforts.

Praise from the Manager :

“The best thing for the manager of the national team is to pick the players for his style and probably most of the people at that level don’t know Lee Cattermole the way I do. He was playing a typical centre midfielder role when I got here where he was able to run where he wanted with a little bit of freedom, but the role in front of the back four is a key role for us. It’s very important, he needs to know when there is danger, when he can go and tackle, when he can press, when he can be close to the defence, and read the game in a certain way, and he is really enjoying it. He is very different from when I arrived here and it is a pleasure to see that. He is a player who has improved the most with me at Sunderland and we have a great understanding.”
