What’s the story?

Liverpool are having a terrific end to the transfer window. The Reds, only yesterday, announced the club record signing of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, albeit the midfielder will join the club in the next summer transfer window.

And now, according to reliable BBC journalist David Ornstein, Jurgen Klopp's side have beaten Chelsea to the signing of Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for a fee in the region of £40m.

It was earlier reported that Chelsea had agreed a fee with the Gunners for the services of the English international, however, the move didn't go through due to Chamberlain's unwillingness to play in a wing-back role.

In case you didn’t know…

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Arsenal from Southampton in 2011 for a fee in the region of £15m. Since then the winger has gone on to make 198 appearances for the Gunners in the 7 years he spent at the club.

The 24-year-old started in Arsenal's 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Liverpool only last Sunday and is now on the verge of signing for the team that came out on top.

The English international had only one year left on his contract and was unwilling to pledge his future to the North London outfit.

The heart of the matter

Liverpool have agreed a fee in the region of £40m for the services of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, making him the most expensive player that the Gunners have sold, overtaking former favourite Cesc Fabregas, who signed for Barcelona for a fee around £35m.

It had appeared previously that Chelsea would beat Liverpool to the signing of the English international, having agreed a fee with the Gunners but they failed to agree personal terms with the 24-year-old, allowing Liverpool the opportunity to beat them to his signature.

The Reds are yet to agree personal terms with the winger, however, with Chamberlain having already rejected a contract extension and the contract offered by Chelsea, it shouldn't be a problem.

Author's Take

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would be an excellent signing for Liverpool. Not only is he English and homegrown, the 24-year-old has established himself as one of the best in the Premier League.

Another huge advantage with Chamberlain is his versatility with the English international capable of playing anywhere in midfield along with either wings.

Not only that, at just 24 years of age, the Southampton youth product, has his best years ahead of him and the Reds have ensured that they benefit from it the most.
