Liverpool's team of the decade

Do Mane, Coutinho and Firmino make this list?

The 2010s have been a roller coaster ride for Liverpool. The club started off the decade with Roy Hodgson, who is without a doubt one of the worst managers Anfield has seen. Some bad signings and some embarrassing football followed. He was replaced by Kenny Dalglish, who won Liverpool their first trophy in six years but was sacked after one season.

Then came Brendan Rodgers, and Liverpool almost won the league under him. Aside from that, however, Rodgers' time at Anfield was nothing to write home about.

The arrival of Jurgen Klopp has changed and transformed the club, and the past four seasons have been much more fruitful for the Reds.

This decade, Liverpool recaptured the Champions League and will be entering 2020 with one of the best squads they have ever had. During these past ten years, some amazing players have graced Anfield.

Here, we take a look at the best of those, as we make a Liverpool XI for this decade.

Defence

Goalkeeper - Alisson Becker

Alisson has had more impact in one year than his predecessors had in multiple seasons

It is a bit harsh to Pepe Reina and Simon Mignolet that Alisson Becker makes this team over them, but his impact in one single season has been unmatched.

If Virgil van Dijk was the signing that transformed Liverpool, Alisson was the one who added that extra layer of security which made Liverpool's defence the best in Europe.

Signed for a then-record £56 million, the Brazilian proved that he worth twice the price the Reds paid for him. He was named the Best FIFA Goalkeeper recently and won the Golden Glove in the Champions League, Premier League, as well as the Copa America.

His presence at the back has elevated Liverpool, and as far as this decade is concerned, he easily outranks Reina for this spot.

Right-back - Trent Alexander-Arnold

Making his first-team debut in October 2016, Trent Alexander-Arnold has grown leaps and bounds the past three seasons and has established himself as one of the best fullbacks in the world.

A scouser through and through, the defender is the best player to come out from the Liverpool academy since Steven Gerrard himself.

Known for his attacking prowess and his tremendous vision, Trent is a modern fullback who excels at his role.

He broke the record for most assists as a defender in the Premier League last season (12), and he is only 21 years old. The sky is the limit for this Liverpool boy.

Centre-back - Martin Skrtel

Quality-wise, Joel Matip and even Mamadou Sakho are better than Martin Skrtel. However, the Slovakian's longevity and service to the club, as well as his memorable moments, cannot be discounted.

He appeared in over 300 games for the Reds, and he wore the Liverpool jersey with pride.

Skrtel joined Liverpool in 2008, and spent over eight years with the Reds, departing in 2016. An uncompromising defender who gave everything for the club, Skrtel was often inconsistent, but yet was a constant in the Liverpool back four for over half of this decade.

His brace against Arsenal and his headers against Manchester City will never be forgotten by Liverpool fans, and he is still adored by the Anfield faithful.

Centre-back - Virgil Van Dijk

This one is a no-brainer. One of the frontrunners for this year's Ballon d'Or, Virgil van Dijk's signing transformed Liverpool into one of the best teams in Europe.

His impact in just two seasons is incalculable, and he has already established himself as the best defender in the world today.

Van Dijk's 2018-19 season is unmatched by any other player in recent memory, and he is the current holder of the PFA Player of the Year Award, as well as the UEFA Player of the Year trophy.

With 20 clean sheets last season, the Netherlands captain will remain a consistent presence for the Reds for at least the next five seasons, and he slides into this list with ease.

Left-back - Andrew Robertson

Signed by Liverpool in 2017 for a mere £8 million, Andy Robertson is one of the biggest bargains in football history. He had a slow start to his life at Anfield, but over the past two seasons, the fullback has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world.

Robertson is as good on the offensive end as he is on the defensive side of the game. His quickness, deadly crosses, and 1 on 1 defending have made him a menace for any forward who comes up against him.

The Scottish captain was named in the PFA Team of the Year for last season, and he just seems to get better and better with time. He and fellow fullback Alexander-Arnold combine to form the best fullback duo in the world.

Central midfielder - Jordan Henderson

A lot of criticism and doubt has plagued Jordan Henderson's Anfield career. He was almost sold by Brendan Rodgers, his style of play is still criticised by many fans, and yet, the English midfielder has proved everyone wrong.

The current captain of the Reds, Henderson is the longest-tenured player at Anfield right now, and he has been the biggest servant for the club this decade.

The captain of Liverpool is a shining example of how working hard is the way to achieve your dreams. He has been immense for Liverpool for the past six years now, and he led his team to glory in June when they lifted the Champions League trophy.

Whatever his doubters may say, Jordan Henderson deserves to be the captain of this club and is one of the most underrated Premier League players of all time.

Central midfielder - Steven Gerrard

Although Steven Gerrard's best days ended when Roy Hodgson came, the former England captain was still one of the best midfielders in the Premier League until his final season. Athletic, with a rocket of a shot and a keen eye for a pass, Gerrard was unstoppable on his day.

Racking up 14 assists and getting into the PFA Team of the Year in 2014, the current Rangers manager played as a deep-lying playmaker in his last few years at the club.

The end of his career was not too kind for the scouser, who left Anfield in 2015. However, Stevie G is the most loved player in the history of Liverpool, and his role as the captain and creator for the first half of this decade warrants him a place here.

Attacking midfielder - Phillipe Coutinho

The Magician had a magical spell at Anfield

Signed for a meagre £8.5 million in 2013, Phillipe Coutinho grew from an inconsistent little kid to a world-class midfielder at Anfield.

Staying at the club for almost six years, Coutinho was arguably the Reds' best player for three seasons in the middle, when he was tearing up the league. He was involved in over 80 goals for the club in 201 appearances.

Known for his dribbling, vision, and his signature long shots, Coutinho was adored by Liverpool fans and was the player the team would go to when in need for a goal. The Brazilian international left for his dream club Barcelona in 2018, but he has not been the same player since leaving Anfield.

A part of him might be wishing that he never left, and there a few fans who would still take him back with open arms at the club.

Attack

Right-wing - Mohamed Salah

In his debut season at Liverpool, Mohamed Salah smashed almost every goalscoring record as he netted 32 goals in a single Premier League season.

The Egyptian has won two Golden Boots in two full seasons with the club and has now established himself as one of the best players in the world. He was the winner of the PFA Player of the Year Award for the 2017-18 season.

The 2017-18 campaign by the winger is matched only by two other Liverpool players this decade, and Salah's consistency and abilities are staggering. A fast, physical winger with a deadly left foot, the former Roma player has been involved in over 110 goals in a mere 120 games for the Reds.

A true phenomenon, Salah's legend at Anfield will only continue to grow given Liverpool's current form.

Striker - Luis Suarez

You have to feel bad for Roberto Firmino here - as good as the Brazilian is, his time at Anfield does not compare to the magic that Luis Suarez weaved in his time at the club. A genuine miracle worker, Suarez was, for a while, simply the best player in the world.

Although Salah may have scored one more goal than the Uruguayan, Suarez's 31 goals in the 2013/14 Premier League season is the stuff of legends.

The best player in England for over two years before he left, "El Pistolero" charmed the Anfield faithful with his skills week in and week out. Strong, creative, and one of the deadliest finishers in the game, Suarez was a menace against every defence he played.

He won the PFA Player of the Year Award in 2014 as well as the Golden Boot and was Liverpool's Player of the Year two seasons running. His place here is reserved without any doubts.

Left-winger - Sadio Mane

Signed from Southampton in 2016, Sadio Mane was one of Jurgen Klopp's first big-money signings; and boy has he delivered.

With a screamer of a goal on his Liverpool debut, Mane has now worked his way to the top of the game and is counted amongst one of the best players in the world right now.

The Senegalese international is one of the fastest players in the world, creative, and strong finisher. He shared the Golden Boot with Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng last season, and his thirst for goals has only grown.

Mane is a nuclear weapon at the front of the line, and he and Salah combine to form the best wing duo in the world. A hard worker and a goalscoring threat at all times, Mane completes this list of Liverpool's team of the decade.
