Loan XI: An analysis of some of the best footballers on loan

Formation

While sending players on loan wasn’t a common process in football a few decades ago, it is something that is done regularly by clubs nowadays. There are a few reasons for sending players out on loan; they might need the move to get some regular game time and impress their parent club (this is most commonly done with young players).

In other cases, the player might have had a falling out with the club or manager and is therefore being farmed out on loan as there wasn’t enough time to complete a permanent move. However, the way certain clubs loan players has come under criticism at times, with Premier League giants Chelsea being the most recent club to receive flak for their loan system.

Let’s take a look at an XI of the best players out on loan at the moment:

1) Thibaut Courtois – The Belgian shot-stopper is considered one of the best young prospects in world football right now. He is currently at Atletico Madrid and is owned by Chelsea. The 21-year old was the youngest player to represent Belgium and is currently their first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Simon Mignolet.

2) Marnick Vermijl – The Belgian right-back, owned by Manchester United, was sent on loan to Dutch club NEC. The versatile defender has represented Belgium at all levels except senior, and will be looking to use this loan move to impress both United manager David Moyes as well as earn a senior call-up for Belgium.

3) Prince-Desir Gouano – The French centre-back is currently at Dutch club RKC Waalwijk, on loan from Italian giants Juventus. He has represented France at all U-18, U-19 and U-20 level and will be looking to get some regular game time in Holland in order to impress his parent club.

4) Karim Rekik – The young Dutch defender is highly rated over at Manchester City, and has joined PSV Eindhoven on a season-long loan. He is a versatile player who can operate as a centre-back or a left-back and has already established himself as a regular at PSV. More impressive performances should earn him a chance at first-team action at the Etihad.

5) Aly Cissokho – The Valencia left-back is known for his pace, ability and work-rate. He joined Liverpool on a season-long loan and will look to give some competition to incumbent left-back Jose Enrique and in turn establish himself as a regular in the French national side.

6) Tom Carroll – The Spurs and England midfielder is known for his abilities as a deep-lying playmaker, especially his passing. He joined London side QPR on loan in order to get regular game-time given the number of midfielders at Spurs at the moment, and will be hoping to do enough to convince AVB to keep him next season.

7) Nathaniel Chalobah – The Englishman, who made his way through Chelsea’s youth ranks, enjoyed a successful season on loan at Watford, and has joined Nottingham Forest this year. He can operate as a defensive midfielder or a centre-back, and is definitely one to watch out for in the future.

8) Suso Fernandez – The Spanish winger/attacking midfielder made a few appearances for Liverpool last season and impressed manager Brendan Rodgers, earning himself a loan move to Spanish club Almeria in order to get more playing time. The youngster is highly rated at Liverpool and has been doing well at Almeria as well.

9) Lucas Piazon – The Brazilian play-maker is considered one of the best young prospects over at Chelsea right now, and is currently on loan at Chelsea B a.k.a Vitesse. He has drawn comparisons to Kaka due to his playing style and will hope to impress Jose Mourinho this season.

10) Gerard Deulofeu – One of the brightest young prospects of Barca’s famed La Masia, the Spanish youngster is currently at Everton. He is known for his pace and dribbling ability and will no doubt look to make an impact during his loan spell over at Merseyside.

11) Romelu Lukaku – The Belgian youngster completed a loan move to Everton from parent club Chelsea on deadline day. Fast, powerful and very physical, the man who was dubbed the ‘next Didier Drogba‘ will be looking to impress Mourinho enough to convince the Portugese boss to make him the main man at Stamford Bridge.
