Luis Suarez: Is he stuck to Liverpool?

Liverpool v Chelsea - Premier League

Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez has made it very clear that he wants to leave Liverpool. Not only that, but he wants to leave England. His desire to leave was fuelled by supposed interest from Real Madrid and he spoke out saying that players can’t refuse that kind of move.

But the problem for Suarez now is that his fellow Uruguayan Edinson Cavani found the same thing. He was Real Madrid’s first choice and is on the verge of signing for them himself. They don’t need two strikers and are now focusing on adding Gareth Bale. So we can count them out.

We can write Chelsea off because he wants to leave England and the extraordinary form of Neymar has added exactly what Barcelona need up front. So is there actually anywhere for Suarez to go to? Here’s a look at what remaining options he has:

The Favourites

Bayern Munich

Bayern were the strong favourites to sign Suarez a few months ago but it is clear that he is firmly their second choice behind Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski. The only way that Bayern would turn to Suarez is in the unlikely situation that Lewandowski changes his mind and agrees to move to somewhere else. Only then will they have room for Suarez. They already have Mandzukic, Gomez and Muller as options up front.

New manager Pep Guardiola could look to deploy him wide on the left at Bayern. He could. That’s the problem because the next question would ‘what of Muller and Robben?’

Bayern already have too many players. Paying £50m for Suarez would be a luxury.

Paris St. Germain

PSG certainly have the money to buy Suarez and are on the look out for a marquee signing. In order to keep improving their standing and growing their prestige, they need to make impact signings. Whether or not they actually need him is another matter.

Last season PSG nearly beat Barcelona in the Champions League on the back of their scintillating attack. Pastore, Lucas Moura, Lavezzi and Ibrahimovic formed a fine and at times, dazzling, counter attacking unit. They all cost a lot of money and Suarez could only really displace Lavezzi in the starting line up. It would be an upgrade for sure, but a £50m upgrade? For PSG, money doesn’t matter, so they can justify it.

However, does Suarez want to go to a lesser league? Although the French league is getting more attention with the exploits of PSG and Monaco, it’s still not the Premier League, Bundesliga or La Liga.

What PSG do offer though is Champions League football and that is something he is keen on.

Napoli

Napoli have been heavily linked with Suarez in light of the Cavani deal.

Suarez isn’t an ideal like-for-like replacement for Cavani but would give Napoli an intriguing dimension to their attack. They have just completed the signing of Dries Mertens from PSV who brings much needed pace and directness and Suarez would bring yet more. He’s shown to be capable of replicating Cavani’s goals tally and will work ferociously hard like his compatriot.

The issue for Napoli is the cost. Unless Liverpool drop the asking price from £50m to a more affordable £40m, they are unlikely to be strong bidders. However, they want to make a Champions League push this year and tried hard to keep Cavani so they mean serious business.

The Outsiders

Monaco They can offer him money, glamour and a lifestyle out of the media spotlight which he seems to desire. He’d be able to play with Falcao and form a potent combination. They can’t offer Champions League football this season, but they ought to be able to from 2014/15 onwards.

Atletico Madrid They’ve got £52m from Monaco in their back pockets for Falcao, and need to replace him. They can’t spend it all on Suarez, but if Liverpool don’t get any bids of £50m, Atletico may have a chance at £40m. They’ve spent huge before unexpectedly- they’ve spent £35m on Falcao and £25m on Aguero.

Real Madrid Perhaps odd that they are here having said no earlier, but you can never tell what Real are planning. If, as is likely, they can’t get l Bale, they might go after Suarez and reconnect the dangerous Uruguayan duo domestically. Where that leaves the likes of Di Maria, Benzema, Ozil and Modric though is the problem.

Barcelona Like Real, they are stocked with forwards, even more so after signing Neymar.

Chelsea They are the extreme outsiders but have to be considered nonetheless. Having missed out on Falcao, Cavani and Lewandowski, Suarez is the next logical option if they want a striker.
