“Thunder never strikes twice” but Football Leaks surely does. This time, the website has come up with a copy of Luka Modric’s employment contract at Los Blancos and created a stir in the world of football.

The Croatian had joined the Spanish giants back in 2012 after a successful four-year-stint at Tottenham Hotspur under the guidance of Harry Redknapp for a transfer fee of 30 million pounds.

The impact of Modric along with that of Gareth Bale was largely instrumental in the qualification of the North London side for the UEFA Champions League for the very first time in the history of the club.

Coming back to the present, Modric is currently under contract at Real Madrid until 2018 and according to Football Leaks, he is pocketing quite a neat sum in sunny Spain.

A great deal for Modric

After his contract renewal, Modric is currently earning 5,643,155 euros per annum which has seen an approximate 19% increase from the time that he had first arrived at the club; as he was originally signed from the Spurs on a contract of 4,749,670 euros per season.

The new contract also has a clause which prevents the Croatian international from trying to quit the club. And should he try to discontinue the proceedings of his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, he would have to pay the Spanish giants a whopping sum of 500 million euros.

Sure, things aren’t looking very bright for Real Madrid this season, particularly in La Liga; but looking at the stature of the club and the way the Croatian midfielder has blended himself with the entire system at Los Blancos, we surely don’t think that there isn’t even a remote possibility of Modric leaving the club anytime soon.

Though Luka Modric earns substantially less amount of money than Gareth Bale who has been his teammate at both Tottenham Hotspurs as well as Real Madrid, the above-stated clause shows exactly how much the Los Merengues value the presence of the thirty-year-old at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Modric, who had started his career at Dinamo Zagreb has made over 360 club appearances in the league scoring more than fifty goals in league competitions. He has also earned more than 80 caps for his country and represented Croatia in two World Cups (2006 and 2014) and two European Championships (2008, 2012).
