Pundit Darren Bent believes Liverpool should make Curtis Jones the main man in the midfield over Dominik Szoboszlai. He claims that the Englishman has shown that he is better and can make more impact when given a chance.
Bent said on talkSPORT that Jones is ahead of Szoboszlai in the pecking order and the former RB Leipzig star has not made the impact needed at Anfield. He said:
"I would say so. I really like Curtis Jones, always have done. It was just can he now nail down a spot. They've got Endo and Szoboszlai but he [Szoboszlai] hasn't quite had the same impact. The injuries have not really helped him. But, no, I think Curtis Jones, 100 per cent."
Bent went on to heap praise on Jones and asserted that the academy product was better in every role in the midfield. He said:
"He's comfortable in possession, he can play the eight, can play the 10, I think he's got great technique. It was just can he get a run of games in this Liverpool side so we can start to see the best of him. And I think now we are starting to see the best of him. He obviously scored a really good goal for England, that will give him confidence as well.
"If you get an opportunity in this Liverpool side, or any side, you have to take it. For Curtis Jones, he's got himself in there, stayed in there, put in some really top performances, so the shirt is now his to lose I think."
Curtis Jones has scored once in the Premier League this season but has started just four matches while coming off the bench as many times. However, his goal was the winner against Chelsea at Anfield and he's also provided two assists.
Arne Slot not taking credit for Liverpool star's form
Arne Slot has distanced himself from Curtis Jones' form at Liverpool this season. He believes that the midfielder has done better ever since he became a father and added that the Englishman has impressed him since the start.
Speaking to the media, Slot admitted that there was a drop in form from Jones this season but believes that the Liverpool academy product is a quality player. He said via The Guardian:
"With Curtis it is maybe not me who did it but because he became a father – and I had nothing to do with that!. You never know if that plays a part or not but since the moment he became a father he started putting in great performances.
"He already did this in the first few weeks that we worked together in pre-season – I was like 'wow, quality player' – but then his performances dropped. But since the moment he became a father he was outstanding again. I think it might have to do with that a bit, but in general it has to do with how the team plays."
The Reds have been in stunning form this season and are on top of the Premier League table. They are also on top of the UEFA Champions League table with four wins in as many matches.
