“Julian Alvarez is better than any version of Drogba” - Twitter explodes as second-string Manchester City beat Chelsea 1-0

Manchester City beat Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

Manchester City's fringe players beat Chelsea 1-0 in the Premier League at the Etihad on Sunday (May 21). Fans on Twitter reacted as the champions bagged yet another win.

Julian Alvarez, who started in attack in Erling Haaland's absence, opened the scoring for the Sky Blues in the 12th minute. The Argentine has now scored in two straight games, also doing so against Real Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals in midweek.

Despite manager Pep Guardiola naming a second-string lineup, his side saw most of the possession. The Blues, though, were the team with more shots on target. Conor Gallagher struck the woodwork during the first half. Young Lewis Hall, meanwhile, tested Stefan Ortega in the City goal twice.

The Cityzens now have 88 points from 36 games and lead second-placed Arsenal by seven points, having played a game fewer. The Blues, meanwhile, have 43 points from 36 games and are 12th in the standings.

What are Chelsea's two remaining Premier League fixtures after defeat to Manchester City?

Chelsea's tumultuous season will come to an end after two more games in the Premier League. Frank Lampard's side return to action on Thursday (May 25) to take on Manchester City's neighbours Manchester United away from home.

The Blues will wind up their season against Newcastle United next Sunday (May 28). Even if they win both games, a top-tenfinish seems unlikely. The end of the season will also bring an end to Frank Lampard's stint as caretaker manager.

A new permanent boss is set to be appointed next season, with Mauricio Pochettino being the reported frontrunner to take over at the moment.
