Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has backed Andre Onana to become a big player for the club after his penalty save against Copenhagen.

The Red Devils signed Onana for €55 million from Inter Milan in the summer. The Cameroonian goalkeeper has had a terrible start to life at Old Trafford. He has conceded 20 goals in 13 games across competitions and kept four clean sheets. He has made a number of errors but had a big redemption moment on Tuesday, October 24.

With Manchester United leading 1-0 in their UEFA Champions League clash at Old Trafford, Copenhagen received a penalty in stoppage time. Onana, however, denied Jordan Larsson from the spot.

Maguire, who scored the solitary goal in the game, recently spoke about the goalkeeper's stint at Manchester United so far, saying (via Utd District):

"I think playing for this club... there's ups and there's downs. When you win, everyone's on top of the world; but when you lose, there's a crisis and it's always someone's fault."

He added:

"Listen, Andre is a big personality and will get used to it. He's going to be a big player for this club, it's a short career [at the club] that he's had up to now.
"Of course, he's had a lot of scrutiny, but we've been giving him far too much to deal with as a defence. But yeah, [the penalty save] is a big moment for him, and I'm really pleased for him."

It was a crucial win for the Red Devils as they opened their account in the Champions League this season after defeats against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

Manchester United gearing up to host city rivals Manchester City

The Red Devils have had a poor start to the season with six defeats in 13 games across competitions. Even their wins have been far from convincing in terms of performances.

However, Manchester United have managed to string a three-game winning run across competitions. They beat Brentford and Sheffield United, both with a scoreline of 2-1, before their 1-0 win over Copenhagen.

Erik ten Hag's side will next host Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, October 29. City are coming into the game on the back of a 3-1 win at Young Boys in the Champions League.

In the Premier League, Manchester United are eighth, six points behind third-placed Manchester City.
