Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has remained coy about his future in a recent interview. The Dutchman's contract at Anfield expires at the end of this season and he is yet to sign a new deal.

Van Dijk has been one of the pillars of the Merseyside club's rise under Jurgen Klopp. His arrival in 2017 provided the defensive stability that propelled Liverpool to the pinnacle of success in recent seasons.

The 33-year-old may be in the final phase of his career, but has been a first team regular under Arne Slot. Van Dijk has registered 17 appearances across competitions this season, all of which have been starts.

Journalist Edu Aguirre recently asked the Dutchman if he will sign a new contract at Anfield. The player gave a cryptic response, as cited by acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano, stating that he remains focused on the upcoming game against Manchester City.

“What a direct question (laughs). I've nothing to say. I'm focused on next game vs City,” said Van Dijk.

The Reds have been outstanding under Arne Slot this season, winning 17 and losing just one of their 19 games. The Merseyside club have conceded just 12 goals across competitions.

Liverpool are leading the Premier League title race after 12 games, eight points ahead of second-placed City. Slot's team are also at the top of the Champions League table after five games, with five wins to their name.

Few would have predicted Virgil van Dijk's impact at Liverpool when he arrived from Southampton in the summer of 2017 for a reported fee of £75m. The Dutchman is certainly one of the finest defenders to grace the Premier League and has been worth his weight in gold at Anfield.

Van Dijk's first trophy with the Reds was the 2018-19 Champions League. The Merseyside club got the better of Tottenham Hotspur in the final to mark the start of the Jurgen Klopp era.

The following year, the German manager got his hands on the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. Liverpool also won the league in the 2019/20 season, their first league trophy in the Premier League era.

Virgil van Dijk has also won the FA Cup, two EFL Cups, and the Community Shield and now has eight trophies with the Merseyside club. He has registered 287 appearances for the club to date.
