Many pundits have predicted doom – of sorts – for Chelsea this upcoming season as the Blues are currently under a transfer ban and are unable to strengthen their squad, and they also have a rookie manager in the form of club legend Frank Lampard at the helm. Those who do not believe in the doom and gloom however have pointed out that due to the ban, Lampard is likely to use Chelsea’s considerable academy products. The jewel in that crown right now? Midfielder Mason Mount.

Mount spent 2018/19 on loan at Derby County under Lampard and had an extremely impressive season at the Championship club, appearing in 38 games, scoring 9 goals and delivering 4 assists too. A creative midfielder capable of finding a pass capable of unlocking even the tightest defence, the England u21 international will likely be given opportunities to prove himself in Chelsea’s first team from the beginning of the season.

The signs are already looking good, too; in a recent friendly win against Reading, Mount – who came on as a second-half substitute – scored twice in the space of three minutes to allow Chelsea to come out on top. Given the patchy form last season of the Blues’ other creative midfielders such as Ross Barkley, the likelihood is that Lampard will put his trust in Mount – and with any luck, that trust will be repaid.
