Atletico Madrid Player Ratings

Jan Oblak had virtually nothing to do but conceded two goals on the night
Jan Oblak had virtually nothing to do but conceded two goals on the night

Jan Oblak - 6/10

He didn't really have a save to make, of any difficulty, apart from the goals. The Slovenian had no chance with either Olmo's header or the wickedly deflected strike from Adams.

Kieran Trippier - 5/10

He was largely pegged back into defending in his own half by the adventure of Angelino and Nkunku and dealt well with the threat. But for the winner, he was caught out, as Angelino ran in behind him and produced the cut-back for Adams to score.

Stefan Savic - 7/10

Savic was terrific in dealing with balls that came into the box. His positional play was outstanding as he kept getting in the way of balls to the Leipzig's front players.

Jose Gimenez - 7/10

Like Savic, Gimenez defended brilliantly in his own box. The two Atletico centre-backs were a big reason why the German side couldn't convert their territorial superiority into more meaningful chances.

Renan Lodi - 7/10

He went forward well and in the first half, was the only Atletico player alongside Yannick Carrasco to come out with any credit.

Koke - 5/10

Koke was really a non-entity in this game. Starting on the right side of the four Atletico midfielders, the captain couldn't really control the marauding runs of Angelino down that flank. Koke couldn't move forward and provide any thrust of his own either.

Saul Niguez - 4/10

This was one of Saul's most underwhelming performances in recent times. He was out-run, out-thought and outplayed in the centre of the park.

Hector Herrera - 4/10

He was taken off before the hour mark after an underwhelming display in midfield. The Mexican was overpowered by the technical excellence and confidence that showed in the passing from Sabitzer and Kampl.

Yannick Carrasco - 7/10

Carrasco was a constant threat down the Atletico Madrid left flank. He drew a smart save off Gulacsi in the first half and went on to test the Leipzig defence with a few more mazy runs and shots.

Marcos Llorente - 4/10

The hero of the last round, Llorente never really got going in his role as a second striker. He didn't win second balls off Costa's duels, nor did he run the channels effectively. It was a surprise that he stayed on the pitch for the whole 90 minutes.

Diego Costa - 5/10

Costa had some decent touches in the game while linking up with Carrasco. He also played the one-two with Felix to help the young Portuguese win the penalty for the equaliser. The big striker was taken off immediately after Atletico Madrid equalised.

Substitutes

Joao Felix came on and changed the game in the second half
Joao Felix came on and changed the game in the second half

Joao Felix - 8/10

The youngster changed the complexion of the game after coming on. His ability to dribble, composure on the ball, and his speed of thought made a difference to the way Atletico Madrid attacked. For a good period of time which sandwiched Felix's goal, Atletico were much the better side and that was all the Portuguese youngster's doing.

Alvaro Morata - 4/10

He came on to replace Costa almost immediately after Felix equalised, but he barely had a touch on the ball in a position of menace to the Leipzig defence.

Felipe - N/A

He replaced Koke in injury time and played as an auxiliary striker to cause chaos in the Leipzig box late in the game.
