Reports: Chelsea set to make move for £40 million winger

Everton v Chelsea - Premier League
Smart move?

What's the story?

Premier League club Chelsea have expressed their interest in signing French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain's Lucas Moura according to French media outlet Buzz Sport.

The Blues could make a move for the Brazilian winger, who has made up his mind on leaving the French club when the winter transfer window opens in January if the report is to be believed.

In case you didn't know...

Lucas joined Paris Saint-Germain from Brazilian club Sao Paulo for a whopping fee of £36 million in 2013. The 25-year-old was a regular in Les Parisiens' starting eleven since his arrival five years ago, however, things are no longer the same for the player.

Lucas has only enjoyed 71 minutes on the pitch from five appearances for the Unai Emery-managed side in the league this season. The arrival of world-class players like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe has massively affected the player's role at the club.

The Brazilian winger was previously linked with Chelsea's rivals Arsenal, but the player claimed to be determined to get back into the Paris Saint-Germain first team.

The heart of the matter

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte wants to make new additions to his side in January and make sure he is well equipped for the season ahead. The Italian manager has identified Lucas as a potential target and could make a move for the player when the transfer window opens.

The former Sao Paulo player could cost the Premier League title defenders around £40 million.

Author's take

Chelsea already have quality wingers like Eden Hazard, Pedro and Willian in their squad, and Conte's current formation doesn't need wingers. However, Willian is heavily linked with a move away from the Stamford Bridge, with Manchester United and China being named as potential destinations. Taking that into consideration Lucas might be a smart signing by the London based club.
