Arsenal fans are drooling at the prospect of signing Liverpool hit man Luis Suarez despite his employers stating numerous times he is not for sale.

Suarez, 26, is valued at £50 million which would equal the British transfer fee record. But do huge price tags burden a player? Well, here are the top 5 most expensive Premier league transfers:

5. Robinho – Real Madrid to Manchester City, £32.5 million

Robinho was City’s first expensive signing under owner Sheikh Mansour. However, the Brazilian turned out to be a huge disappointment.

He was supposed to be the start of the City revaluation but as it turned out, he was the first sign of the owner flashing his cash on an over-rated player that backfired.

In his second season in Manchester, Robinho moved down the pecking order and was loaned off to his boyhood club Santos. In August 2010, he was sold to AC Milan for less than half of what City had paid for him.

Liverpool v Everton - FA Cup Semi Final

4. Andy Carroll – Newcastle United to Liverpool, £35 million

Carroll was Newcastle’s most consistent performer, but he wanted to move to a bigger club, so he moved to Liverpool in January 2011.

He made 44 appearances for the Mersyside outfit in the Premier League but scored a disappointing total of 6 goals.

He did not even last two seasons at Liverpool. In August 2012, he was loaned to West Ham United where he then signed a permanent deal this summer.

3. Juan Sebastian Veron- Lazio to Manchester United, £37.5 million

Big things were expected of attacking midfielder Veron, who was loved by Italians for his fantasisma on the pitch. However, he did not live up to Sir Alex Ferguson’s expectations scoring just 11 times in his 82 appearances in all competitions.

Despite the Argentinian’s dreadful form, Chelsea tried to revive his career by capturing the midfielder for £19.8 million. As many predicted, he flopped at the south London giants making only 14 appearances in his first and only season for the Blues.

2. Sergio Aguero – Athletico Madrid to Manchester City, £38 million

Manchester City FC v Villarreal CF - UEFA Champions League

He will be forever known as the man who brought the title to Eastlands, but does that define Aguero’s City career to this date?

In his first season, he scored an impressive 30 goals, including that title winner against Queens Park Rangers.

However, things went downhill for Aguero last season as he managed to hit the back of the net only 17 times. It is too early to judge his career in England, but he will need to improve from last season to show he is worth the money City paid.

Chelsea v FC Steaua Bucuresti - UEFA Europa League Round of 16

1. Fernando Torres – Liverpool to Chelsea, £50 million

At Liverpool, “El Nino” was hailed as a hero by the Kop with an impressive goal tally. But after the 2010 World Cup, many believed he was losing form.

Evidently, Chelsea disagreed as they paid a record £50 million to land the World Cup winner. This backfired as Torres scored once in 18 appearances for the Blues in the second half of the 2010-11 season.

Things did not get any better for Torres in his first full season with the west London club, with only 11 goals in all competitions. Things did look up for Torres last season as he scored 22 times, but he did play 64 games which is an average rate of just over a goal every 3 games.

It is fair to say the price tags of these players have put too much pressure on their shoulders, but will this happen to Suarez?
