SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND – MAY 13: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson looks on during the Barclays Premier League match between Sunderland and Manchester United at the Stadium of Light on May 13, 2012 in Sunderland, England.
I am not a Manchester United fan, but their success in modern football has bewildered me beyond expectation. I started watching football after Zidane’s magnificent goals against Brazil. I was introduced to English football by a distant relative and he was an Arsenal fan. They had been recently crowned as English Champions and I was supporting a top club as a kid. However what followed next 3 seasons was an enormous hate for Manchester United and immense love for Arsenal.
But Arsenal had to rise and they rose with their undefeated team and ended the 2004 season at the top. 2 titles in 3 years and we had the best striker in the world, Thierry Henry. I was proud to be a Gunner and the Red Devils were fighting for the Champions League spot. Then Abrahmovich bought Chelsea. They won the title and Manchester United was a dead and buried affair. Fergie meanwhile was building a team, he brought little known Ronaldo to Old Trafford and staved off competition to buy Wayne Rooney.
At the end of the 2009-10 season, United were sitting at the top with three titles in a row and my Arsenal had gone without a trophy for five years. Long before Tevez showed that infamous placard, me and some friends had t-shirts with exactly same quote. Damn, this man is a genius, he has built teams with reputation, given the world the best icons (Cantona, Giggs, Beckham and Ronaldo). So when he retires (probably when he kicks the bucket), he will be carried out in a coffin with championship medals. He will die managing Manchester United and this is a truth that I have now realised.
At 71, he fights for his players the way a 25 year old does. He’s giving a hard time to young managers and wealthy club owners. He isn’t buying costly strikers (Andy Carroll), is not in the hunt to buy every footballing star on earth (Manchester City) and he is not in a mood to sell his captains (Wenger). Every time he is pushed back, he responds with a fitting reply. Arsene Wenger is a sad and lonely face now, he was the nemesis, the opposite, the antagonist for Fergie. He has been replaced by Mourinho, Ancelotti and Mancini, in the same order. The one man who smiles and gears up for the next season is Fergie. He remains a common thread between all the competitions (individual and team). So Mr. Tevez if you think Sir Alex Ferguson will not respond then wake up and read some history.
PS: If you ask me who will win EPL next season, I’m gonna go with Arsenal. I am a fan dude :)
