Barcelona defender set to join Premier League club: Reports

Lenglet does not feature in Xavi
Lenglet does not feature in Xavi's plans going forward

With the La Liga title now in the bag, Barcelona have shifted their attention to the upcoming summer transfer window. The club are aware that they will need to sell a few players to facilitate summer incomings and defender Clement Lenglet could be one of those heading out.

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Lenglet, who spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, could be sold permanently this summer. The report claims that Spurs are happy with the Frenchman's performances and can move in for him this summer.

Barcelona signed Lenglet from Sevilla in the 2018 summer window for a sum of €35.90 million. While he was among the first-choice centre-backs at the club in his first two seasons, he fell down the pecking order with Xavi's arrival.

With multiple defensive signings in the 2022 window, Lenglet's minutes were set to take a further hit and as a result, he was sent out on loan to Tottenham. For the north London club, he has made 34 appearances across competitions, scoring once and assisting twice as well.

While his loan period is coming to an end, it is clear that Xavi will continue to prefer other centre-backs over him. Thus, Spurs are preparing a move to sign the Frenchman permanently.

Lenglet will have three years remaining on his Barcelona contract after this month, and thus they will not want to sell him cheaply. They also need to accumulate funds for summer signings and as per Spanish outlet AS, the Catalan giants are expecting a sum in the region of €12 million.

Tottenham Hotspur interim boss hints at permanent deal for Lenglet

Tottenham Hotspur interim boss Ryan Mason was quizzed about Lenglet's future earlier this month, and he hinted that Spurs are looking to tie him down on a permanent deal.

“The talks for Lenglet to stay at Tottenham will take place in the summer. Lenglet is the type of player we want. He’s professional and doing well”, Mason said (via football-espana).

The France international is reportedly waiting for a permanent solution to Spurs' managerial conundrum before taking a decision himself.
