Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is set to delay his proposed move to Chelsea until the end of next season, according to reports in the Mirror.

The Liga outfit’s coach, Diego Simeone, has apparently pleaded with the club’s board to resist selling the star striker for another 12 months so he can continue his project at the Vicente Calderon.

Los Rojiblancos currently sit top of La Liga and have booked their place in this season’s Champions League final and their Argentine manager is convinced he can build on that success if his squad is not disassembled in the upcoming transfer window.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked Diego Costa, but Jose Mourinho’s side are believed to be in pole position with the move to be worth around the £35 million mark

The Brazil-born Spain international was integral as Atleti dumped Chelsea out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage.

Only Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo have scored more league goals than Diego Costa in La Liga this season.

Diego Costa has scored 27 league goals this season, more than the combined total of Olivier Giroud (16) and Samuel Eto’o (9).
