Chelsea are reported to be set to pip Manchester United to the signing of Inter Milanmidfielder Fredy Guarin. The Metro write that Jose Mourinho’s Blues are set to make an initial bid of £10 million, which may rise to £15 million, in an attempt to beat David Moyes to the Columbian’s signature. The midfielder is rumoured to be keen on a move to the Premier League and Chelsea’s move could spark a transfer tug of war with United.

Both clubs are seeking a central midfielder in the mould of Guarin. The 27-year-old former Porto midfielder plays centrally and has the box-to-box game to adapt to the Premier League. Chelsea are in the market for a long term replacement for Frank Lampard, whilst Manchester United’s midfield is widely regarded as a large part of their struggles this season.

Guarin has started all fifteen of Inter Milan’s fixtures this season, although he has only finished eight of them. The 47 cap Columbia international would bring versatility to the side, as he is comfortable in both attacking and defensive midfield roles, and at 6ft1 is an imposing physical presence.

If Chelsea or United should move for Guarin then he will also come with the added bonus of being eligible for the next stages of the Champions League, as Inter failed to qualify for this season’s competition.

Guarin has scored three goals – including one each in both of his last two matches – and provided three assists this season.
