Manchester United hope to replace club captain Nemanja Vidic with unsettled Juventus centre-back Martin Caceres, reports the Express.

The Serbian has decided to leave Old Trafford in the summer once his contract expires and has could be on his way to Inter on a two year deal. However, while their departing skipper heads to Italy, David Moyes has reportedly pinpointed another Serie A star to replace the 32-year-old.

Vidic will leave a gaping hole in United’s already weak back line and Moyes is keen to secure a new addition that can fill the Serbian’s shoes.

Although a number of potential targets have been highlighted by the Scot he is believed to favour a move for Uruguayan international Caceres due to his versatility.

The Juventus man can also operate at left-back, which has been a problematic position for Moyes as he is unimpressed with Alex Buttner and failed to sign Leighton Baines from former club Everton.

Caceres has fallen down the pecking order at the Old Lady under boss Antonio Conte and could be available for a cut price £8 million.

With other rumoured targets Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund and Phil Jagielka of Everton expected to cost significantly more, Caceres could fit the bill in terms of price too.

However, Moyes is no longer at Everton, he has a vast array of finances at his disposal and can chase the world’s top talent. A Juventus misfit is unlikely to plug the gap Vidic will leave behind.

Martin Caceres has a pass accuracy of 91% this season.
