Athletico Madrid star striker Sergio Aguero has revealed his desire to leave Atletico Madrid after the disappointing season the Madrid based club has had. Aguero released a statement on his website stating that his wish to leave Atletico Madrid, where he has spent 5 seasons which put him on the map of the world’s best footballers, was purely motivated by his ambition to progress in his career.
“I’ve thought long and hard and I am convinced that I must be true to myself. I do not think I put a ceiling on the ability to keep learning, to keep growing. After five intense years, this stage for me personally is over and I have to give way to a new one.
“I’m about to turn 23 and I have everything before me. Suffice it to say that this is not an economic issue but strictly a sporting one. So I want to clearly express my appreciation to the club for the efforts they have made for giving me a salary that equates with the largest clubs in the world.”
This season has been a barren one for Atletico Madrid as they finished 7th in the La Liga with Aguero being their only star performer. The Argentine striker scored 27 goals in all competitions this season. Speculations surrounded his future during the January window where he was linked heavily with Real Madrid and Chelsea. The rumours were quashed when the son-in-law of Maradona signed a new deal which would keep him at Athletico till 2014. However, Aguero has now revealed that signing the contract was simply a way to increase his market price and get Athetlico a good deal.
“I wanted to sign as a way to give back to the club for all the support they have given me. Had I not done so, they might not have received any more for my transfer. I received then a promise that the club would not stand in my way if I wanted to leave this summer. Therefore, in line with that commitment and my decision, I have asked them to listen to any offers they receive for me from different clubs.”
Speculation surrounding his move to Real continue to circulate however. It is understood that Real Madrid are still interested and Florentino Perez looks to make Kun Aguero his next big buy of the summer as Real Madrid look to strengthen their squad. If it materializes, Aguero would have crossed the great city divide of Madrid as Atletico and Real are derby rivals.
