1. Pistorius to appear in court on murder charge:

Olympic amputee sprint star Oscar Pistorius is expected to appear in court early Friday, charged with the Valentine’s Day murder of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot four times with a gun registered in his name. Twenty-six-year-old Pistorius — known globally as “Blade Runner” because of his carbon fibre prostheses — will appear at a magistrate’s court in the capital Pretoria.

Two-time champion Roger Federer moved swiftly into the quarter-finals of the Rotterdam World Tennis tournament on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over home hope Thiemo de Bakker. The 62-minute victory sent the Swiss top seed into a Friday clash with Frenchman Julien Benneteau who he will be facing for the sixth time.

8. Serena closes in on top spot in the WTA rankings:

Serena Williams needs only one more win to become world number one for the first time in two-and-a-half years after reaching the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open in double quick time on Thursday. It took the 15-time Grand Slam title winner less than an hour to complete a 6-0, 6-3 win over Urszula Radwanska, the world number 37 from Poland.

9. Azarenka serves up Doha double bagel:

World number one Victoria Azarenka stormed into the Qatar Open quarter-finals on Thursday with a ruthless 6-0, 6-0 triumph over highly-regarded American Christina McHale. Defending champion Azarenka, who is at risk of losing her top ranking to Serena Williams this week, produced a relentlessly forcing performance over McHale, a 20-year-old who has already posted seven victories over top 10 opponents.
