The top 10 highest goal scorers in Europe's top leagues this season

As much as we like to laud other aspects of the game such as defence and passing, football is mostly all about goal scoring as following the popular quip, "goals win games".

Some top attackers have managed to consolidate their mastery of the art of goal scoring and it is these kinds of players that this list seeks to celebrate.

Surprisingly, there are players that didn't make the cut this time around owing to their poor form; these include the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona's Luis Suarez.

#10 Nabil Fekir (Lyon)

Everton FC v Olympique Lyon - UEFA Europa League
Fekir has been awesome this season

Bet you didn't see this one coming right? The Frenchman has been in red-hot form this season, powering Lyon to joint 2nd place in Ligue 1 with 35 points and edging past defending champions AS Monaco on goal difference.

He has been instrumental in the team's attack this season and alongside teammates like Memphis Depay and Mariano Diaz- he has shone brightly as one of the best young attackers in football and has scored 14 goals in all competitions.

Fekir has attracted attention from clubs all over Europe like Arsenal and with his return to form, it is easy to see why.

He was fantastic in the victory over Metz with 2 goals on the day and was instrumental in the team's 5-0 demolition of St Etienne with a further 2 goals and an assist.

#9 Paulo Dybala (Argentina)

La Joya has been doing all the right things for the Bianconeri
La Joya has been doing all the right things for the Bianconeri

The player tipped to take over the reins at the Argentinian national team once Lionel Messi hangs up his boots for sure, Dybala's rise has been astronomical considering he was pretty much unknown as recently as 2014.

With Gonzalo Higuain's recent struggles in front of goal, Dybala has stepped up to the task magnificently and helped his team with very crucial goals, scoring 14 in all competitions.

His greatest strength is the broad range of goals he scores. He is great at free kicks, can curl a stunner from 20 yards and can put away a tap-in.

His goals have made a huge impact on the club's fortunes as well, having notched 2 in their 4-0 win over Torino and a hattrick in their 3-1 win over Sassoulo.

He has come into his own as a forward and right now, looks to be in his element.

#8 Mauro Icardi (Inter Milan)

FC Internazionale v AC Milan - Serie A
Icardi celebrates after scoring a hattrick in the Milan Derby

Previously despised by Inter fans because of his presumed pride, they must love the Argentine goal getter now.

captain of the club, Icardi has put in solid performances time and time again this season, helping the club to the 1st place position in Serie A currently.

Supplementing the wealth of Argentine talent on this list, the striker surprisingly has had little action with the national team despite him being one of the best strikers in the world at the moment.

Icardi has 16 goals in all competitions this season, but what is truly peculiar is the fact that all of them have come in Serie A.

His most important contribution is definitely his magnificent hat-trick against AC Milan at home in the Milan derby. He also scored 2 crucial goals in their 2-0 win over Atalanta and another 2 in their 3-1 win over Cagliari.

#7 Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)

Athletic Club v Barcelona - La Liga
Leo celebrates yet another goal

Coming in two places above his compatriot and potential successor and completing the Argentine trio, most will be surprised at his comparatively low ranking on a goal scorers' list.

17 goals less than halfway through the season is spectacular for most strikers, but this return is below average for the Argentinian.

To be fair, Messi is the leading scorer in La Liga as no one has more goals than him. He is let down by his return in other competitions, with just 3 in the Champions League and none in the Copa del Rey.

Arguably the greatest of all time, Messi has basically dragged his team to first place on the table and is keeping them there with his 14 league goals.

Most Barcelona faithful remember his single-handed demolition of Juventus early in the group stage.

He also recently scored a crucial one in their 2-0 win over Villarreal and ensured his country qualified for the World Cup with a hat-trick against Ecuador.

#6 Radamel Falcao (AS Monaco)

El Tigre is back and leading the line well for an AS Monaco side that has lost last season's spark

He was no doubt the surprise of the season last season, the spectacular lob away at Manchester City a confirmation of his return to form.

He has been prolific this season as well and for the first time in a long time, it looks like we have El Tigre as good as can be.

Now past the dogged injuries that plagued him, Falcao has managed 14 goals in the league this season (placing him second behind the number 1 entry on this list). His 3 Champions League goals and 1 French Cup goal further boost his return.

He notched a crucial strike in their 1-0 win over Angers and one in their 2-0 win over Caen. Over the past year, he truly has become the club's go-to goal scorer.

#5 Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Watford v Liverpool - Premier League
Salah has been the shining light of the Premier League season

Mohamed Salah ahead of Messi? Well yes, you read right. The Egyptian is the highest goal scorer in the English Premier League this season with 13 goals.

Salah has been magisterial so far this season, spearheading a Liverpool attack that before his arrival was already packed and in the process, making his teammates look less spectacular.

He has shown his potential in a way that puts Chelsea's treatment of him in a different light. He has shown improvements in shooting, dribbling, and positioning and could well end the season as the highest goal scorer in the Premier League.

His 5 Champions League goals are nothing to scoff at as well. He was instrumental in their 1-1 draw to Chelsea in the Premier League, scoring the Reds' only goal.

He also scored a hat-trick in their 7-0 Champions League demolition of Spartak Moscow.

#4 Ciro Immobile (Lazio)

Benevento Calcio v SS Lazio - Serie A
Immobile has been the man behind Lazio's surprise surge

Perhaps the attacking revelation of the season, Immobile has hit the ground running from the start and hasn't looked back since. Having disappointed at Dortmund and Sevilla, he has now found that form that made him so deadly while at Torino.

He has scored 15 in Serie A in just 15 appearances, 2 in the Supercopa Italia and 2 in the Europa League. He is having, no doubt, one of the best seasons of his career and at this rate, might just take Lazio to the Champions League.

Incredibly, Immobile scored 1 and assisted 3 in their 5-0 win over Benevento in October and 2 in their 3-0 win over Cagliari in the same month. With his current momentum, he might very well end the season as Serie A's highest goal scorer.

#3 Pierre Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund)

Auba has been superb despite BVB's struggles this season
Auba has been superb despite BVB's struggles this season

Edging ahead of his former teammate Immobile, Pierre Emerick Aumameyang makes our 5th position and frankly, this is no surprise. He has been among the best strikers in the world for more than 3 seasons now, finishing as top scorer last season with 31 goals in the league.

If anything, his return this season has been below par as he has only 12 goals in the Bundesliga so far.

However, with 4 in the Champions League, 3 in the DFB Pokal and 1 in the German Cup, his return is still as high as ever.

Who knows? If he performs as well this season as he has in others, Real Madrid might finally just come knocking themselves.

#2 Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)

RSC Anderlecht v Bayern Muenchen - UEFA Champions League
Lewandowski celebrates scoring against Anderlecht

The competition between Lewandowski and Aubameyang is always a fun one to watch. The Pole is in top form, as usual, having netted 14 goals in 15 games in the Bundesliga this season.

His consistency over the past 6 years has solidified his place as arguably the best traditional number 9 in football having scored 30 goals in the domestic league for two seasons running.

A former teammate of Aubameyang as both of them played together at Dortmund, Lewa scored goals for fun until Bayern came calling in 2014. He is currently leading the Gabonese international with 2 goals on the Bundesliga top scorers' log.

Lewandowski has popped up when it mattered most this season, notching a goal in their redeeming 3-1 victory over PSG in the Champions League group stage and another one in Bayern's slim 2-1 win over Anderlecht in the same competition.

#1 Edinson Cavani (PSG)

The top marksman in European football, El Matador has been sensational this season
The top marksman in European football, El Matador has been sensational this season

Showing that he can no doubt perform without the shadow of Zlatan Ibrahimovic holding him down and leading the pack with a tally of 25 goals, Edinson Cavani is the highest scorer in Europe's top leagues so far this season.

The Uruguayan has been in sublime form this season, notching 17 in the league alone alongside 6 in the Champions League and 1 in the French Cup.

He has bossed the centre-forward position for PSG, finishing with a power and precision akin to that of Zlatan Ibr.

In case you forgot, he scored that belter of a free kick to gift his side a draw against a Marseille side that was better on the day and netted the winner over Monaco.

No Ronaldo or Suarez?

What can we say? Some strikers are having a better season than others. Ronaldo has seen the poorest start to a season for him in more than 8 years and Suarez has only 6 goals in the league so far. Undoubtedly, they are better players than some inclusions in this list but alas, the gods of football haven't smiled on them so far this season.
