Thiago Silva signs new deal at Paris Saint-Germain

Brazil v Spain: Final - FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013

Barcelona’s long term target Thiago Silva has signed a new contract with the Ligue 1 champions Paris St-Germain according to The BBC.

Having signed for Paris St-Germain for £36 million (€42 million) from Italian giants AC Milan in 2012, the Brazilian has now extended his stay at the Parc des Princes until 2018. L’Equipe reports that a €2 million-per-year increase in salary proved enough for the centre-back to commit his long-term future to the French side.

Barcelona were interested in signing the centre-back after his stand-out performances for Brazil at this years Confederations Cup. The 28-year-old’s wage demand was the only problem before the deal halted.

The La Liga champions have made it clear that signing a centre-back is their top priority this summer with Carles Puyol suffering serious injuries problems all season and undergoing surgery in March, while the likes of Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano and Adriano were either injured, suspended or inconsistent during the campaign. Barcelona have missed out on Thiago Silva and reports suggest they have now turned their attentions to Chelsea’s David Luiz.
