Top 4 finish not a priority for Demba Ba?

Southampton v Chelsea - FA Cup Third Round

Demba Ba was featured in the media yesterday fresh from scoring the winner against Manchester United on Sunday. That goal put us through to the semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley next weekend.

Tonight, Chelsea take on Rubin Kazan in the quarter-final first leg of the Europa League at Stamford Bridge – another cup competition we are doing well in so far and Ba himself has re-iterated that it’s the trophies you win that are more important than finishing inside the top four this season.

He said:

“The top four is very important – but we want a trophy. We are looking very good in two competitions, the Europa League and the FA Cup. We’re going to do everything to win them both. When you retire, no one probably remembers that you finished in the top four. They remember you won a trophy. It’s important for a player that you win a trophy. We always talk about trophies. That has to be the aim for the players and the clubs.”

This a concern for me it. Of course it would be good to win the FA Cup and/or The Europa League this season as long as we finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League as the Champions League should be the main priority for everyone this season.

I can understand Ba’s position as a player as you want to be able to show people what you have won and achieved during your playing career.

However, the problem is that Demba Ba has come to our football club during a time of crisis and someone needs to give him a reminder of the main priority being the Premier League this season.

Rafa Benitez has taken stick for his team selection against Southampton last Saturday and rightly so in my opinion. It was obvious to me that he saw the game as less important that United and Chelsea paid the price. We are now down to fourth in the league with Arsenal two points behind us and Everton four points.

It’s a real concern this late in the season that Rafa Benitez and people like Demba Ba, who have both been here short term, will see the FA Cup and Europa League as a chance to add to their CV’s!

Chelsea Football Club needs Champions League football and it’s about time everyone pulled in the same direction in that changing room!

If they do that and Chelsea finish inside the top four and win a trophy as well, it would be great. However, if we do not finish in the top four, next season is going to be a tough one.
