Griezman's switch to Barcelona is the biggest transfer highlight so far Aston Villa make their return to Premier League after a gap of years

The European Football season is about to begin in a few days. The clubs across the continent have spent the past two months in search of the players who can make their clubs perform better. The current transfer window has already seen some big-money signings. Few clubs have dug deep into their pockets in hope to get big stars to play for their team. There have already been three transfers of € 100 million or more this season. Let us look into the clubs that have spent the most in the current transfer window so far. The stats below includes the cost paid to loan the players into the team.

#5 Aston Villa - € 125 million

Aston Villa make their return to Premier League after a gap of years

Aston Villa got promoted to the Premier League after a gap of three years. Aston Villa played all 24 Premier League seasons before the 2016 relegation. The owners of the club seem to want the same run again under their manager Dean Smith. They have spent nearly € 125 million on signing new players.

Wesley Moraes is their costliest signing at € 25 million. With petty spendings on many other players, Aston Villa has strengthened their squad in almost all departments. Tyrone Mings, Douglas Luiz are few of the players from the other Premier League clubs who switched to the newly-promoted side.

Aston Villa has spent more than the league's regular big spenders Manchester City and Manchester United. The other astonishing fact is that Aston Villa is the only club that has spent more than €100 million in transfers and will not be playing European football next season. It will be interesting to see where Aston Villa will finish in the highly competitive Premier League next season.

#4 Juventus - €151.5 million

Matthijs De Ligt de Jong

Juventus have tried everything to win Champions League over the past few years. They signed their regular nightmare Cristiano Ronaldo last year. But the Champions League's pet boy was not enough to take them to glory. Juventus grabbed the services of Aaron Ramsey, Rabiot and their former captain Buffon on free transfers.

Their biggest signing this summer has to be Matthijs de Ligt. Juventus signed him for €85.5 million. Higuain followed Sarri from Chelsea after his loan spell. Juventus has spent a total of €151.5 million on transfers this summer.

Juventus are a stronger side with the new signings. But whether this will be enough for the ' Old Lady' to win Champions League is a question of future.

#3 Barcelona - €237 million

Frenkie de Jong

The Spanish Champions had a weird last season. They won the La-Liga comfortably by outlasting their two Madrid rivals. Football beyond La Liga was a silent disaster to the club. They squandered their three-goal first-leg advantage to Liverpool at Anfield. They followed it by a loss to Valencia in Copa Del Rey final.

Barcelona spent a total of €237 million on players this season. Barcelona signed Antoine Griezman for €120 million. Frenkie de Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax for a fee of €75 million.

The signing of Griezman can relieve a lot of pressure from Messi. Barcelona is looking for a centre-back as a longterm leader to their team's backline. If Barcelona finds one such player, their numbers may increase further.

#2 Atletico Madrid - € 243.5 million

Joao Felix

Atletico Madrid surprised everyone when they signed Felix for €126 million. With just one signing, Atletico made a strong statement to their domestic rivals who have been very active in the current transfer window.

Diego Simeone has always been happy with what he had. Despite the low spending capacity of Athletico Madrid, Simeone has proved to be a winner in recent years. Winning Europa League, La Liga and making Champions League final are few of his achievements.

Athletico made a switch to their new stadium last season. Usually, clubs across the globe struggle financially after such moves. Athletico broke the pattern as they have spent a total of €243.5 million this summer. The signing of players like Trippier, Llorente will boost the strength of Athletico Madrid for sure.

However, it will be interesting to see how Athletico will get better of their biggest spending domestic rivals.

#1 Real Madrid - €303 million

Eden Hazard

Real Madrid was predicted to be everywhere in the transfer market even before the last season was over. The return of Zidane to the helm boosted Madrid's attractiveness to the players.

Real Madrid has spent € 303 million so far. Hazard alone cost them €100 million. The other players who joined Hazard at Santiago Bernabeu were Jovic, Mendy, and Rodrigo.

Real Madrid is now a team of ageing stars. Ramos and Marcelo at the back; Modric at midfield; Benzema at the front have all passed their prime. So Zidane will not relax till the last day of the Transfer market. Real Madrid may spend more in the final days of the transfer window.

Mountainous spendings have not shown any positive signs for Real Madrid so far in the preseason. Zidane may have a hard time to save respect that the Champions League hattrick gave him if his side continues their abyssal run.
