Goalscoring midfielders have always been the most prized assets of a title-winning team. A midfielder who has the ability to pick up 15 to 20 goals per season is often the difference between a good side and a great side. However, not all teams are blessed with such supreme talents, which is why sides spend huge sums these days to bring players with these abilities into the team.

Perhaps the greatest goalscoring midfielder to grace the Premier League was Frank Lampard, who scored a phenomenal 177 goals during his time as a player in the league. Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Matthew Le Tisser have all been brilliant for their teams and the Premier League has been blessed with some fascinating goalscoring midfielders in the last two decades.

This season too, midfielders have contributed a lot of goals for their teams and today, we take a look at the top 5 goalscoring midfielders in the league so far.

#5 Lucas Moura (Tottenham)

Goals Scored - 6

The Brazilian has been deployed as a Center Forward and a Second Striker on 10 occasions this season. Lucas Moura is predominantly a right winger, but has been used across the front three so far and it has worked well for Tottenham. He has scored 6 goals from 19 appearances this season already, and even though he is currently nursing a knee injury, he is expected to continue his good form once he returns.

The fact that Moura has scored more goals than Eriksen and even Dele Alli, speaks volumes of his form this season. He has scored 4 goals from his right foot, and one each from his left foot and his head. The Brazilian has also registered 24 shots so far, 10 of which have been on target. He has also hit the woodwork once, but has missed 7 big chances as well.

His versatility has been a great asset to his club and the Brazilian has fit into Pochettino's attacking tactics well. His speed, technical abilities and eye for a goal means that he is a constant threat to the opposition. This season, Moura has been the 5th best goalscoring midfielder so far and will definitely add a few more to his tally until the month of May.

#4 David Silva (Manchester City)

Goals Scored - 6

One of the most consistent performers of the Premier League for years now, David Silva has developed his game further this season, enabling City to cope with the injury to De Bruyne. The Spaniard has added another dimension to the game and has been playing a little deeper this time. He has played approximately 15 times as a central midfielder and 11 times as an attacking midfielder, a change from the system when he normally ventures forward in unison with De Bruyne.

However, Silva has still managed to score 6 goals so far and has also picked up 2 assists in the Premier League. He now has 9 goals and 6 assists from 26 games in all competitions, however, his goalscoring form has taken a dip in recent times.

The Spaniard has scored just 1 goal in his last 8 appearances in the Premier League, a period where he has also missed 2 games due to a hamstring injury. But David Silva remains the backbone of this City team and is one of the best Goal scoring midfielders this season.

#3 Felipe Anderson (West Ham United)

Goals Scored - 8

West Ham spilled the money at the start of the season to bring the Brazilian to the Upton Park. Felipe Anderson joined the Hammers from Lazio for a club record fee of £36m and as such, a lot was expected from him. And so far this season, he has been nothing short of a revelation for his team.

The Brazilian has already scored 8 goals in the Premier League so far and has also picked up 2 assists. He has registered 13 through balls so far - only David Luiz and Jorginho have attempted more in the league! The Brazilian has also completed 56 accurate long balls and has been the spark in the West Ham midfield so far.

He has mostly played through the left, where he has scored all his goals from and has started all games for his team in the Premier League. Felipe Anderson is the third best goalscoring midfielder in the league right now and quite a few clubs will be monitoring him right now.

#2 Paul Pogba

Goals Scored - 8

Ever since Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford, Paul Pogba has found his swagger back. He is now dictating games and asserting his influence on the pitch. He has scored 5 goals and picked up 4 assists in the 6 games under Solskjaer and has been one of the best players in the league in recent times.

Pogba has been impressive for Manchester United in the past as well, but the one thing that has been missing was the goals. This season though, the Frenchman has already hit 10 goals from 26 games in all competitions, which includes 8 from 20 games in the Premier League. It is the first time that he has touched double figures for Manchester United and with a lot more games to play in the season, one can expect Paul Pogba to reach even higher figures.

The Frenchman has thrived under Solskjaer's attacking tactics and has the 4th most shots in the league. Only Mohamed Salah has registered more shots on target than Pogba; the Egyptian has 38 shots on target to the Frenchman's 37! It is clear that Pogba is ultra motivated to become the best goal scoring midfielder in the league by the end of the season and he is not too far from the top right now.

#1 Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton)

Goals Scored - 9

The Icelandic midfielder was Everton's record signing last season, joining the Toffees from Swansea City for an estimated club record £45m. Sadly, Sigurdsson was unlucky with injuries in his first season, scoring just 4 goals in the Premier League. He ended the season with 6 goals and 5 assists from 33 games, as a knee injury caused him to miss 8 games at the end of the season.

As such, the onus was on the Icelandic midfielder this season to prove his worth and Sigurdsson has been Everton's joint top scorer so far, scoring 9 goals from 23 appearances in the Premier League. He has also registered 3 assists so far and has been Everton's lone shining light in a dismal season.

The Toffees are currently 11th in the league and have lost 6 of their last 10 games, a period where they have won just twice. However, with this season's top goalscoring midfielder in their ranks, Everton still have the ability to turn their season around.
