Since the inception of the Premier League in the 1992/93 season, 49 clubs have competed to win the title and a number of them clubs looked to avoid relegation.

Out of the 49 clubs that have competed to win the Premier League crown, during the 28 years, only six clubs have managed to lift the prestigious trophy. Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Leicester City are the only teams to have won the league.

On an individual level, numerous players have made a significant impact on the league despite clubs going down and players switching clubs.

But to deal with losses as a professional is not easy and these players have picked themselves up after numerous defeats. Here, we take a look at 5 players who have lost the most number of games in Premier League history:


#5 Gary Speed

Late Welsh footballer and manager, Gary Speed began his career with Leeds United in 1988 and spent eight years at the club before joining Everton in 1996. After two seasons with the Toffees, Speed Joined Newcastle United in 1998.

Until 2004, the Welsh midfielder plied his trade at the Toon and was revered by the club's fans during his time at Newcastle. Bolton Wanderers signed Speed thereafter and the club was then under Sam Allardyce, who was pushing for a spot in Europe.

Speed made a total of 535 appearances in the English league, is fifth on the all-time list of highest appearance holders, and is also fifth on the list of players to have lost the most number of games, with 185 Premier League losses.

The Welshman played 85 times for his country and was appointed the manager of Wales in 2010. A year later, Speed committed suicide in his garage and took his life while he was still manager of Wales.

#4 Gareth Barry

Former English international and Premier League winner, Gareth Barry made his Premier League debut for Aston Villa back in 1998. The Englishman has since gone on to make a staggering 649 Premier League appearances for four clubs.

Barry is the all-time record holder for the most PL appearances and still plies his trade in England's top-flight with West Bromwich Albion.

After 10 initial years at Villa, some as the captain of the club, Barry opted to move and join to Manchester City, where the midfielder played a crucial role in guiding the club to their first ever Premier League triumph under Roberto Mancini.

Barry surpassed the previous record holder Ryan Giggs with 632 appearances to his name. A veteran holding midfielder, Gareth Barry will go down in Premier League history as one of the greatest English midfielders and will be vital in West Bromwich Albion's bid for safety this term.

Barry is also fourth on the list of players to have lost the most number of games, with 194 Premier League losses.

#3 Kevin Davies

Former English, Southampton, Blackburn and Bolton striker, Kevin Davies enjoyed a fruitful 22-year professional career.

However, this lengthy career saw its fair share of defeats, propelling him to the 3rd spot on this list, with 194 Premier League losses. He currently sits in the third spot, tied with Barry who is sure to surpass him this season.

The big, strong English central striker began his career with Chesterfield in 1993 before moving to Southampton in 1997 and Blackburn in 1998 and then Bolton in 2003, where he spent the majority of his career.

Under Allardyce, Davies enjoyed his most promising spell as a top-flight striker, scoring numerous goals for the club in all competitions and becoming the captain and leader for Bolton. Davies spent 10 years at Bolton Wanderers before finishing off his career with Preston North End from 2013-15.

The striker was capped once for his country and remains one of the country's finest players to have not been capped more. A good technical player with great power and strength, Davies could do it all on the field and was a complete team player.

#2 David James

Another former England international on this list is David James, who has played for a number of clubs during his illustrious professional career, ending his career with 197 Premier League losses. He is second on the all-time list of players with the most losses in the English top-flight.

Making his debut for Watford in 1988 after coming through as a product of their youth academy, Liverpool signed James four years later - at the same time the Premier League was introduced.

With over 200 appearances for the Reds during his seven-year spell, he made moves to Aston Villa (1999), West Ham (2001) and Manchester City (2004) regular first-team action was a key demand for him to remain settled at a club.

Harry Redknapp, the then Portsmouth manager, signed the veteran Englishman in 2006 and together they won the FA Cup.

He won 53 international caps for England, before retiring after the 2010 World Cup. Joining a handful of smaller clubs towards the end of his career, both in England and elsewhere across Europe, James eventually retired at the start of 2015 after a brief stint with ISL side Kerala Blasters.

Veteran Australian shot-stopper and another legendary Premier League goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer began his career at National Soccer League club Marconi Stallion in 1990. The Aussie 'keeper spent four seasons at the club before moving to Germany for the next two years with Dynamo Dresden and FC Kaiserslautern.

The Aussie spent the next decade with Middlesbrough - making over 300 appearances for the club since joining in 1997. In 2008, after 11 seasons with the Teessiders, he made the decision to move south to London, with Fulham interested in establishing some stability at the back.

After 5 years with the Cottagers, a two-year spell with Chelsea followed that, but was largely ineffective, with opportunities scarce. He made three Champions League appearances and played four games in the Premier League, before a final campaign with former champions Leicester.

The keeper tops the list as the player who has lost the most number of top flights games since 1992, with 200 Premier League losses.
