Bayern Munich won the UEFA Super Cup on penalties after the match ended 2-2 after extra time in Prague.
The match started off with Bayern dominating possession and making repeated forays into the Chelsea box. However, in the 8th minute, completely against the run of play, Fernando Torres sent the ball into the Bayern net. The goal came after a brilliant run from the Chelsea half from Eden Hazard, who then sent the ball down the right wing to Schurrle who then whipped the cross into the path of Torres who hammered it in.
Chelsea then hung on for the rest of the half as the teams went into the break leading 1-0. After the break, the Germans attacked with even more ferocity and two minutes in, Franck Ribery who scampered past his marker to deliver a powerful strike from outside the box past the diving Cech.
In the 84th minute came the moment which changed the complexion of the game when Ramires clattered into Gotze and was given a second yellow for the game which forced the referee to give him his marching orders. However, Chelsea hung on to force the game into extra time.
Three minutes and Eden Hazard got his name on the scoresheet cutting past Lahm and Boateng and then firing the ball low past a blinded Neuer. However, despite their best efforts as well as Mourinho’s attempts to get the Chelsea fans behind them, Javi Martinez struck with the last shot of extra time, side footing his shot past a diving Cech who had made numerous saves to keep his side in the game during the final minutes of extra time.
The penalty shootout followed and Bayern came up winners after Neuer blocked the final penalty from Lukaku. The shot wasn’t hit with much power and Neuer easily caught the ball to give his team the only trophy that was missing from their trophy cabinet and of course, hand Pep Guardiola another victory against his old foe, Jose Mourinho.
