Everyone has bad days. Even football players. It may be the time when they miss a sitter or a penalty. However, some misses make the viewers fall off their seats either laughing or crying. Here’s a look at a few monumental misses by footballers:
1. Mario Balotelli: What’s more auspicious than starting with Balotelli? During the 2011-12 season, Manchester City had a friendly against LA Galaxy. Mario Balotelli must have thought that the game was a part of training and having a clear shot on goal, attempted a ridiculous back-heel. He missed and was immediately taken off By Roberto Mancini who looked livid with Balotelli. This is another reason why Mario Balotelli is called eccentric.
2. Fransesco Totti: When you score off a chipped penalty, you look like the smartest man in the world and make the goalkeeper look like a bumbling baboon. But when the keeper stays where he is and you chip the ball straight into his hands you look like the stupidest guy ever and make the keeper look either smart or just dead lucky. This is what happened to AS Roma legend Totti when he chipped the ball straight into the keeper’s hands. And the ‘keeper was as cool as a cucumber as if he had been expecting it. And what does Totti to do? He tries to hit the ‘keeper in the head. Dear oh dear!
3. Jay Rodriguez: The Southampton player stepped up to take the penalty high on confidence, ran in aaaaaaaaaand slipped. The goalkeeper even dived the wrong way. I always feel guilty laughing over this one as I feel he was unlucky. But nevertheless the penalty was hilarious and I just can’t stop laughing every time I see it. And I feel it is even better than the Terry miss, even though I am no Chelsea fan.
Fernando Torres: This miss will always be remembered by all football fans. After this miss, Torres, who was already having a bad time at Chelsea, became the butt of all jokes and trolls. After a lovely through-ball by Ramires the job was half done and Torres even went past the keeper. But it seems that he hated the idea of the ball hitting the back of the net and hit it wide. Epic!
My favorite: Sorry, I don’t know the name of this player and his team, and sorry about the video quality too. But that won’t stop you from laughing your head off. The guy somehow takes the ball away from the keeper and finds an open net but hits the ball straight into the crossbar. Just hilarious! My grandma could have scored that one.
There are tons of other incidents which left some players embarrassed, but these are the best in my opinion.
