Coming across bots in Fortnite is not an uncommon sight. They have been around since the early days of the battle royale game and will be there until the very end. However, in-game, they don't look any different than the average player. They can be found emoting in lobbies while waiting for the match to start and are decked up with the latest cosmetics.

That said, there are still ways to tell if someone is a bot in Fortnite Chapter 4. While the signs may be difficult to spot at first, there's a recurring pattern that's hard to miss after a couple of hours worth of gameplay.

Three ways to tell if someone is a bot in Fortnite Chapter 4

1) Predictable patterns of movement and attack

Bots in Fortnite tend to move in very predictable patterns. When they make contact with players in combat, they'll move sporadically in random directions rather than approaching the target head on. Unlike real opponents who would try to hide or secure high ground, bots do none of the above.

What makes this more evident is how they choose to shoot at targets. Rather than taking single shots, they tend to fire in short bursts at any range. Given that certain weapons function within a fixed range, most of these shots tend to go wide.

2) Terrible aim and combat skills

Since bots in Fortnite tend to fire randomly, most of their shots miss. Even at point blank range, their shots go wide. However, on rare occasions, they seem to inherit Aimbot capabilities and will beam opponents from any distance.

Numerous players have also reported bots simply running past them to mine a wall for no reason. Rather than engaging the player in the open, they will go inside the structure and break the wall before engaging the player from within. This erratic behavior makes no sense for the most part.

3) In-game name scheme

One of the most distinct telltale signs of an opponent being a bot can be found after eliminating them. They tend to have in-game names such as HawkWrath74 or MineMountain86. This is a naming scheme that Epic Games uses to name their bots. It's more than likely procedurally generated.

Since Bounty Boards provide the target's name, players can check if their opponent is a bot or a real player before engaging them in combat. At times, however, even real players tend to have similar usernames, which can make ascertaining things a bit difficult.

Why are bots so goofy in Fortnite?

They are programmed as easy targets for players to practice on and get kills. Rather than being stone-cold killers, bots in Fortnite tend to be easy-going and goofy. They function as incentives for players to eliminate and earn XP.

Since many lobbies tend to be sweaty, these bots allow players to score a few eliminations. They can also be used to populate low-ranking lobbies to help beginners find their footing in-game. Rather than facing off against seasoned veterans, newcomers can practice on dummies to learn the ropes.
