There have been rumors about Microsoft’s Xbox VR headset for years. While Microsoft has previously developed the mixed reality HoloLens headset, it never supported Xbox games and services. However, the recent partnership between Xbox and Meta Quest has VR gaming enthusiasts excited.

Last year, Xbox Cloud Gaming arrived on Meta Quest, allowing players to enjoy Xbox titles on a large virtual screen. Now, the collaboration goes a step further with the announcement of a limited-edition Xbox-inspired Meta Quest headset. While Meta and Microsoft haven’t shared details about Xbox VR’s capabilities, this partnership hints at Microsoft using Meta’s already-established expertise to develop a new headset for Xbox gamers.

Note: Part of this article contains speculation about an unreleased device.

The Xbox VR could be a limited-edition Meta Quest 3

The exact form of Xbox VR remains to be seen. However, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in an Instagram post that the headset “comes out of the box with Xbox controllers and Game Pass, so you can immediately just start playing on a big screen anywhere you go.”

From his statement, it seems Microsoft and Meta may collaborate to launch a tweaked version of the Meta Quest with a deeper integration of Xbox hardware and services.

Using Meta’s expertise in virtual reality space also allows Microsoft to have a presence in VR headset space without building one from scratch. Moreover, if successful, this can lead to a long-term collaboration for a dedicated headset with exclusive titles.

Is it enough to compete against PS5 VR?

Sony's PS VR has established itself as a major player in the VR space. Its latest PS VR2 features high-fidelity visuals, improved tracking, and innovative controllers with haptic feedback. Additionally, PS VR boasts a library of exclusive VR games, including critically acclaimed titles like Grand Turismo 7 and Horizon Call of the Mountain

To compete with the PS VR, Xbox VR needs to have a strong value proposition. While Xbox Cloud Gaming on Meta Quest offers a huge Xbox game library, most games play on a flat display hovering in the AR space.

Exclusive VR experiences are crucial for any VR platform. Xbox will need to invest in developing (or acquiring) compelling VR games to truly rival PS VR's established library. Xbox can also optimize their already popular titles like Forza Horizon or Starfield and offer them on Game Pass to bring in their existing player base.

Overall, the Xbox-Meta partnership has exciting potential. Exclusive, high-quality VR games can challenge PS5 VR's dominance. With careful planning and execution, Xbox might just carve out its place in the VR arena.
