The Denmark Open is an international badminton tournament held annually in Denmark. The tournament which was formerly known as Danish Open is organized by Danmarks Badminton Forbund.
The tournament was started in 1935. However, it was not held in the period between 1939 and 1944 due to the World War II and then between 1956 and 1964.
The tournament seeks to attract the best shuttlers in the world.
Venue and Details
The 2018 edition of the tournament will be hosted by the Odense Sports Park in Odense, Denmark. The arena has been hosting the Denmark Open since 2008. Odense is the eleventh different host in the history of the tournament.
The 2018 Denmark Open will be played between 16th and 21st October 2018. It is a part of the BWF World Tour Super 750.
The total 2018 Denmark Open prize money is $775,000.
2017 Denmark Open Winners
The men’s singles event of the 2017 Denmark Open was won by Srikanth Kidambi while women’s singles event was won by Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand. Liu Cheng and Zhang Nan of China won the men’s doubles event whereas Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan of Korea Republic bagged the women’s doubles title. The Chinese Taipei pair of Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet won the mixed doubles title.
Performances by Indians at Denmark Open
Indian badminton legend Prakash Padukone won the men’s singles title at the Denmark Open back in 1980.
More recently, Saina Nehwal won the women’s singles event in 2012 when she beat Juliane Schenk of Germany 21-17 and 21-8.
In 2017, Srikanth Kidambi became the third Indian to win a title at the Denmark Open. Eighth seed Kidambi beat unseeded Korean Lee Hyun-Il by 21-10 and 21-5.
