Day 3 has been concluded here in the city of Rio de Janeiro with the third set of eight matches played, two in the men’s and six in women’s hockey tournaments at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro.
Let us now take a look at all the hockey results from Day 3:
India took on defending champions Germany after a day’s break in the Men’s competition in the first fixture of day 3. Niklas Wellen struck early from open play for the Germans, which was soon cancelled out by Rupinder’s third PC goal in two matches. Despite dominating the field throughout the 2nd half, the Germans ran away with all three points after a dying second strike from Christopher Ruhr that ended it 2-1 in their favour.
Argentina played Canada in the other Group B match and were sailing through to a 3-0 victory courtesy Gonzalo Peillat’s twin strikes before Scott Tupper scored a late goal to reduce the deficit by one goal. It ended 3-1 to Argentina.
Having earned a solitary point from their tournament opener, India’s women went 3-0 down to Great Britain in an unevenly contested encounter. Giselle Ansley, Nicola White and Alex Danson were the scorers for the British, as Vandana Kataria failed to drive home a consolation goal in the closing minute which left the Blueskirts’ account unopened for the night.
Matters worsened for the Hockeyroos with their second upset in as many days as the American women edged past them 2-1, Michelle Vitesse and Caitlin Van Sickle scoring for USA before Aussie forward Kathryn Slattery fetched her first goal of the Olympics which proved insufficient on the night.
Taking after the men’s team, the Argentine women defeated Japan 4-0, slamming in 4 goals in the biggest result of Day 3 to earn their first three points in Rio.
In Group A, Germany overturned an early lead to see off New Zealand 2-1, Anne Schroder scoring the decisive goal in the 3rd quarter while China handed Spain their second successive loss in a 2-0 encounter, Zhao Yudiao and Peng Yang with the two first-half strikes for the former.
On the other end, top-ranked Netherlands thumped South Korea 4-0, riding on Kelly Jonker’s stupendous hattrick.
